Topic: Money Good? (Read 264 times) |

I have an interesting opportunity which presented itself yesterday. Last week, I did a little talking at lunch with some folks I "network" with and was kind of bantering back and forth about various corporate subjects and the long-term employment outlook, et al. Next thing you know, I have one of these guys call me last night...Did not know him very well and he tells me that they want me to come and work for their bank. Back in technology. Managing projects for their new e-business initiatives. Being in IT is like having your teeth drilled by a Nazi dentist.... I'll get more cash-ish, that's for sure (MUCH more). And one can never be too rich or too thin. But goddammit, I am comfortable here. Does money equal happiness? Anyone have any thoughts? Changing in this economy can be suicide and I am not sure I want to do that.

So what exactly is your complaint? 
I know what you mean Woobs but getting comfortable in any job also has its dangers. Change can be good, but a foolish leap can be worse. Weigh the pros and cons and what you ultimately want, what they are offering you.... what am I saying, you already know this.
Beats facing unemployment any day now.

I agree with Peppie. Sometimes what you think is good and long term really isn't. Just like your offer, things can change and do a 180 in a matter of minutes. It happened to me. Thank God I landed on my feet. But I should have taken the plunge before and I could be sitting pretty. Don't get me wrong, I'm not doing too bad, but it could be better. Weight pros and cons, be sincere with yourself and don't rationalize.

Nice problem to have. The money is always nice but being comfortable and satisfied will add years to your life, maybe save you some headaches and defintely save you some gray hairs.

Just how safe if your networking position? Been at it long? Built yourself a nice little shelf? Money isn't as important as it used to be when you were reaching for more out of necessity? Take a sheet of notebook paper and make two columns...In one, list the advantages and in the other list the disadvantages. Tally it up.
It's wonderful to like your means of employment. I've been in a position where I just hated to go to work....but I had no choice then. Now I do and I wouldn't trade it for more money as long as I can make it comfortably on what I now earn.
Life it too full of stress. If you have a chance to live your life with less of it, you're way ahead.

and another thing...if you do decide to change...get a contract written up....cross all the T's and dot the I's. Make sure that contract is in your favour...job description etc...so they can't suprise you with an add on to your job. Make sure you are covered in every way!!!!! But I still say listen to that voice in your head. Sometimes when things look too good to be true...they usually are. Tred carefully.

I can understand wanting change in job roles though. I know that's what I want instead of more money.

I appreciate in a huge way the thoughts thus far. Not sure if I was looking for validation or maybe something that would spark inspiration in me. It's a tough choice, truth be told. I am in a position now where there is some degree of influence. And I can go to someone's wig if they deserve it... In this new gig, I may have to be, ugh, gracious. Seeing as how the "business" becomes the customer then. sigh.....
So I add that to the mix too. But money is an issue. I dunno. Got to do some thinking tonight. I don't have a sit-down lunch with some of the people that will be making the "final" decision until next week anyway. Plenty of time to ponder. I thank you all, though. Any other thoughts are well appreciated....

I was just reading the other day that in 2001, the number of IT contracting opportunities dropped by 14% across North America. In 2002, it dropped by another 10%. (It seems to have leveled off in the 1st half of 2003 and things are already looking a bit better for the 2nd half.)
That's a lot of contractors that are OUT OF WORK.
Maybe something to keep in mind...

While a new job may bring it's own unique type of stress into a persons life, more money can help alleviate other stresses that person may have. Debt, living paycheck to paycheck, and so on...
I like my job, even though I wish I made more. Would I consider quitting here and go somewhere else? Sure, but I would have to think about the following:
Security. Just how secure is the job I would be going to? With a family, I cannot be out there pounding the pavement for long if things didn't work out at the new job.
Money. How much would it take to get me to leave here. I've never put a number on it, but I think I would like to make enough where my wife could stop working if she wanted to. Enough to pay off the bills and not have to charge things anymore.
Health Insurance. I guess if you make enough money, you don't need to worry too much about this. However, with the family, health coverage is a big factor.
Brian, I recall you having a little one right? I would encourage you to do what's right for your family and not necessarily what's right for you. If having more money will help your family, then learning to be a little gracious may not be that bad. If having more money takes you away from your family, then maybe it's not a good thing.
