I tried the 60 mg for four days, 50 mg for four days and so on and it didn't work this cycle, although it worked my first cycle.  I then went up to 90 mg and tried tapering from that.  I got one or two days relief but it didn't break the cycle like it did three years ago.  I had to try another route after that.  I don't know what but it's not supposedly good to take high doses for long periods of time.  My mom takes 10 mg a day every day cause she has borderline emphysema but no more milligrams than that.

Blake was on prednisone for well over 3 years.  Five months ago he started tapering off.  He'll be starting 5 mg. every other day for a month and then he's off completely.  That's a LONG time to be on prednisone but it was the only thing that let him live any kind of a half way normal life.....we'll just have to see how it goes now.

Mopar has taken 60 mg a day for up to eight months at a time as it is the only thing that gives him relief, and remember he's chronic. After eight months the ha. start breaking thru' again and we're at this point now.

We asked his doc what damage the pred. was doing and he repied that no-one really knew; that they guessed that it was not a good thing to do and that it was probable that long term use like this would cause bone loss and other nasty effects but that they actually didn't know WHY it worked or how, and as it is used only briefly for other health probs, they could only guess at the long term effects on CHers.
Mopar has no option but to use it as he cannot get relief from preventatives and cannot use Imitrex 8 - 10 times a day throughout the year, neither can he puff on his O2 tank while we are at work. (Wouldn't get much work, would we?)
Like Jackie explains about Blake - it's the only thing that lets him live any kind of life and he accepts that most meds are a trade off of some kind.
We were grateful for that pf time.
Back to reality!

From RXLIST...

PATIENT INFORMATION

Prednisone is a glucocorticoid steroid used to treat inflammatory conditions of the body, breathing difficulties, some cancers, allergies, psoriasis and other conditions. This drug does suppress the immune system and those taking this medicine should avoid exposure to chicken pox or measles. If you are exposed, contact your physician immediately. This drug can also mask signs of infection and with long term use cause cataracts. This drug should be monitored closely by a physician if taken for a long period of time. The dose must also be decreased slowly over time (i.e., tapered) to avoid the body going into withdrawal. The most common side effects include water retention, muscle weakness, stomach irritation, and visual disturbances. Stomach irritation can be alleviated by taking this medication with food. It is important to take this medication as prescribed and to be assessed by your physician on a regular basis. The dose of medication will be specific to you and your condition.

Pretty much lays it out.
