Imitrex and rebound Ha's

I went undiagnosed with Ch for 12 years, then was treated by my GP for another 10 with a sundry of drugs that didnt do anything to stop my pain. Finally back in 1997 a new GP referred me to a Neuro and they gave me Imitrex for the 1st time. My Ch's before imitrex were almost always typical. Get home from work, relax, Wham, Bam...on average 3 or 4 times a week during the worst of my cycle and always tapering off after 5 or 6 weeks. Cycles lasted on average of 10 weeks.
Now, after having started on Imitrex for the last 6 years, My Ch's are unpredictable. I think imitrex gives me rebound Ha's. Its almost like the beast sits there and waits for the imitrex to wear off and Wham, Bam! 3 weeks now i have been taking the imitrex daily, Its like i am in 1 big constant Shadow. As soon as the imitrex wears off...Wham, Bam!!
I am thinking i need to wean myself from the Imitrex for a few days, But dammit, The pain is so unbearable. I have tried to ride one out and not make it before i inhaled a spray. As most of you know, If you don't catch the beast before he goes full blown, Imitrex only dulls the pain for me then. I am stuck in the old preverbial "Rock and a hard place"
My new Neuro appt. is 8-13-2003, i am hoping to get O2 then. I am sure this will get me away from me dependancy on Imitrex.
Just pondering my options and wanting opinions,

If you want to go drug free for a bit, try going for a run as soon as you feel one coming on. Going for a jog/run aborts mine in 10 - 30 minutes, usually closer to 10. Might help, might not, but given the number of people who get relief this way, its probably worth trying. Plus, its good for you.

Pat it sounds like your in a bad place right now, sorry. You might be at your peak and you may just have a couple of weeks left that are real bad (MIGHT), so hang in there.
You sound a lot like me, I try not to use the trex, this cycle is just ending for me and I've only used 6 shots, the nasel stuff doesn't work at all for me.
For me they seem to get to a point where I don't think I can take it anymore then they start lifting.
When I have a HA The clock is my best friend, I know there's a light at the end of the tunnel, if I get hit at like a quarter till, I know that it will be gone or a least better by half past. To kill time I will go for a ride, driving really helps me, I will drive on the highway near my house for 20min in one direction then turn around and drive back knowing that by the time I get back home it should be gone.
I also will take showers That kills like 10 to 15 min.
Also, I don't waste time with a nero, for me it takes forever to get in. My GP can get me in sometimes the same day, I do all the reserch myself and tell him what I want to try, Amerge really helped me this time, 2.5mg am and pm. Learned here.
I feel ya brother, hang tough, They will go away.

I think you're right about rebounds....
... but like you said in more or less words... there really isn't much option when you've got a Devil dancing on your optic nerve, and you know that there is relief right there, staring you in the face....
... There are people on here that are completely drug free... maybe you should find out who they are, and see what they have to say about it...
Me... I'm too much of a puss to go med free during a cycle...

SUZY & Dan, You may be right about driving, but we have a highway near our house that's not very busy and I always go by myself, It forces me to concentrate on what I'm doing, It works for ME! as for the bridge thing I have three kids and a wonderful wife and no matter how bad it is I'm not gonna leave them.

Nothing I've read in the last year suggests that a tolerance to Imitrex develops; to the contrary, one of my latest posts said that large doses over long periods does not reduce effectiveness.
A possibility--and you might give us some info on this: has the length of an attack changed over the years? IF they have become longer then a possibility is not rebound (in fact, recent medical info is developing agreement that rebound is not likely with Imitrex and cluster).
If attacks are getting longer, you may have recurrence, that is, the effective duration of the Imitrex is shorter than the length of your attacks. That can lead to a temporary aborting of the attack, the Imitrex "wears off", and the headache redevelops. This is why the question of changing duration over time is relevant.
IF you want to take a drug holiday, might ask your neuro for a trial of Zyprexa, 5mg. I've had excellent results with it aborting an attack in 20-minutes. (10mg is 5 isn't sufficient.) Besides, it's cheaper.

I spent the last 2 years drug-free and I think the whole CH nightmare grew. The medicines may not help much but maybe they are stopping/slowing the advancement of it. 2 drug-free years brought me that much closer to being chronic...and every time through the cycle (6 in 2 years), the beastard got meaner.
It's really not a good option. Find something that works for you.

Lee...Back when we were shooting competition shotguns and traveling all over the country, Blake drove lots of miles with a cluster. Like you, he said it helped him concentrate on getting through it. Rarely did we have to pull over. We did get lots of looks.....a man driving with a 02 mask on was curious to some... 
Sad note...Blake had to quit shooting competition as the recoil became to much  but the trouper he is he still traveled with me....and he couldn't even have a beer with the gang after the shoot was over Clusters have "focked" up lots of stuff for him/us...so we just move on the something else and keep plugging along

well here's a weird one...
when I use the imitrex shots, I get 3 or more CH's a night...when I use the nasal sprays, I only get 1 a night ???
i guess everyone's HA duration is different and body chemistry reacts differently to certain drugs...

Driving While Under CH is also a no-no for me!
Went to a big party during my last cycle and (for the first time in my life) proposed myself to be the designated driver... cause I can't drink while in cycle.
Well my buddies did what they do best and drank themselves under the table. Five minutes after we left, you guessed it, I got hit. Bad one. I was soon going all over the road and scared the shit out of everyone! Lucky we were not arrested, not a cop in the world would have believed I was not dead drunk...
Sad to say, I am a much better drunk driver than CH driver...

Gotta say I never got a rebound from the Imitrex Injections. It just brought relief. Guess I'm lucky. As far as the being on the road with a CH ........... revoke my license !!!!!!!!

Hi all I am new here. Reading the posts some may think I have it pretty good. I have not had a attack for 2 years 4 monthes up till then it was about every 12 monthes I generally go about 4-6 weeks of hell a year. This is the first time I did the shots and these are some of the worst headaches I can remember maybe its just because its been over 2 years? Its totally got me laid out I checked the kip scale LOL I am up there on the 8-9-10 range. The shots I dont know how much but seem like it wanted to help but was no miracal. The Amerge dont seem to help 1mg tabs I just got yesterday. The last one I got was in waves for 14 hours. Took amerge as percscrbed Pretty much hurting right now still kind of like a hangover you know what I mean? The next one I get I am going to double dose the amerge at the on set. Saw a post about jogging I may try that seems some times a walk has helped. I can not help but wonder about this rebound? what are you all talking about? Seems like I had some bad ones 12 - 15 hours after the shot? I have only ever had 2 shots one on Monday and one on Wedsday on monday the doc did not perscribe nothing more by wedsday I was in bad shape. I am getting way off here. I will come back when my mind is better. Thanks.

You all are dumbasses (Except Jacks) in thinking you can post about driving without saying what level Kip you were at, give me a fucking break, was it a 4, 5,6?.....anyone can drive up to a 7 or even 8.
Imitrex caused me to go from 3 HA's a day to 6, when I stopped using the shots it went back to 3........make up your own mind, mine is already.

As far as driving, I have been stuck behind the wheel with some doozies. I doubt they were 10's though. In fact, i believe the act of driving and concentrating kept them from escalating past the 6 or 7 that they might have been. And back to RiverRat, i believe that is what he was saying. I have posted here 1 time with a bad headache, but i can honestly say. This is the last place on my mind when i am facing a 8 or higher!
8-13-2003 is my day of reckoning. I will then find out if O2 will be my saviour. Gawd i hope so, because i honestly believe the Imitrex is giving me Rebounders and i also believe it is hard on the old body!

As for your kip question, I rarely have a 10, but I almost alway have an 8 or a 9, and yes I do drive, there are a lot of times when I can't hardly see out of my right eye.
