I've read all about the triggers for CH and always knew alcohol was a No No! But i could never really determine what my other triggers were.
Last night, I had a big plate of spaghetti and covered it in Mozarella cheese. 45 minutes later i experienced maybe the worst CH of my life. Luckily, I had some imitrex inhalers, or luckily i thought. I inhaled that sucker thinking all i had to do was endure about 15 minutes of this godawful pain. 30 minutes went by without even a dent, in fact it felt worse. I found myself hugging the airconditioner vent crawling around on my hands and knees, pulling my hair, etc. Finally after 30 minutes of a level 10, i couldnt take it any more, so inhaled another imitrex inhaler. 20 minutes later, i felt it start to drain out my ear, but it stopped at about a level 6. Kept that level 6 all night. Just enough pain to keep me from sleeping, but not enough to warrant another inhaler. I dont remember when or even if i ever fell asleep. But i do know i woke up with the Godawfullest CH hangover. My head felt bruised, i mean it was actually tender to touch.
I been in full cycle now for 3 weeks. Sometimes 3 or 4 Ch's a day almost everyday. I have been taking imitrex tablets like they are candy and taking the inhalers as my last resort, usually when the bastard woke me up.

I am wondering....Am I ,Can i develop a immunity to imitrex, and if so, How does one deal with this pain med free?

Thanks, Patrick

Patrick,

Sorry for your pain. I personally never had any luck with the pills (To slow) or by the time they kicked in the beast returned. Have you tried the injections? They work great for me when in cycle. Give it a try, there pretty easy to use and very fast acting. The cheese you are probably talking about is loaded with MSG and can be a trigger for me also WIC.

Patrick, according to Dr. Bigal, a CHer will not develop an immunity to imitrex as a general rule.  Everyone is different, and some folks have had it stop working, but overall, imitrex should not stop working for CH according to their studies.

Patrick -

Ask your doctor about trying the newer triptans. Everyone reacts differently to each of them. Den just got a bunch of free samples of Frova and Relpax to try out. Worth a shot.

Personally - Imitrex never worked that well for me. The pills did nothing. The inhalers did nothing.  The shots work 1/3 of the time. I have better luck with Zomig. I am going to try the Frova and Relpax too.

And about the pasgetti - I had a CH'er friend who swore any heavy carb meals like that gave him attacks...especially macaroni, pizza, breads, etc.
