540 Regulator Modification

Increasing flow rate on 540 regulators - Sean C got one of the 540 regulators I have available. Although tested to make sure it worked, there was no way to determine the actual flow rate other than the gauge. It seemed extremely slow to him. On checking some of the others laying in the O2 Bin of Goodies, I found the same thing. Some blasted air great, others were much slower, even tho the gauge said 15 lpm were flowing thru. Not cool. Back to the lab. With a few simple tools, a 540 can be turned into a veritable wind tunnel. Why do this, you ask? Good question (I guess.) When jumping on canned air in the middle of the night, already ramped up to Max HeadBoom, I can huff much faster than 15 lpm. MUCH faster. Once things come under control, the flow rate can be turned WAY down, and easier, slower breathing suffices. Here's some pix, and a step by step so you too can enjoy the bounty of heavy huffing. Unscrew the exhaust port on the regulator. You will need to put the regulator body in a vice, and use the proper wrench to undo it. It'll look like this. Most have the #77 stamped on them. Drill out the small hole in the center with a small drill bit. Put it back together, and hook it up to your tank. WOOSH. Aces......... Please don't attempt this if you have the wrong tools, or are Extremely Stupid. You're on your own when it comes to Reg Mods. It's things like this that make my day. RJ PS: Don't forget to order a Clustermasx today! PPS: If you got one of these puppies from me, are not satisfied with the flow rate, and don't have any tools (or are too stupid,) you can mail it back. Will return unit with increased flow, or replace with another, as long as I have "others" left. Again, I ain't liable for squat.

WARNING: Do not drill anything while the regulator is still attached to 02 tank. Do not use drill near 02 tank either. Sounds like a stupid advice til your read the Darwin awards!

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

1/16" does nicely, thank you very much. Anything smaller can, kind of......Shatter. Of course, moving upscale, a 1/8 or 3/16 bit will really put you in a Cat 5 whirlwind. Empty an E tank in 3.27 minutes. Probably give you a nosebleed, too. Stick with a 1/16" bit(1), unless you Just Can't Get Enough Glue. RJ (1) - 1/16" equals 1.5875 mm

| This is a portion of an actual article I received as being on a mailing list for the university's Emergency Medicine Society...I totally had to share it after reading your post! Quote:“The Life of an Emergency Medicine Physician: Our Daily Fight against Darwinian Evolution” The talk will cover a series of interesting, weird, and wacky, “Darwin Award” EM cases. |
