How many O2 hits in a day is too much?

100% O2 for 15 minutes usually stops an attack for me. Some times I go back for more if the pain comes back after 20-30 minutes. How many times is a safe amount in a day?

Jester hi! nice to meet you. In answer to your question I don't know how much is safe but I thought I would share some tips on O2 that have worked for me and I hope they will help you. Firstly when the hit is over I stay on the o2 but reduce the LPM slowly over a further 10 minutes, so I go from 15 to 9 LPM and then to 4LPM for a few minutes each, I find that helps alot. My second tip which now has me aborting in 5-7 minutes is to use a clustermasx. These were developed by a clusterhead and are quite simply, incredible. I didn't think anything could improve on o2 but I tried one anyway and couldn't believe the difference it makes. Have a look at www.clustermasx.com to see the "mask of the Gods" and look for other peoples reaction to it here too.. its well loved! Hope this helps a bit Let us know how you are doing okay? Regards Helen

There is no upper limit on how often you can use it. The medical literature does report, however, that for a significant number of people your experience is common, that is, oxygen seems to delay an attack rather than blocking it totally. One "dose" seems to stop an attack but it developes again rather quickly. If this is your long term experience, you may wish to consider another abortive where one dose fully stops an attack.

Thanks for the responses guys. I too decrease after 15 minutes to 3 for 5 min then stop. Yes, it seems to work better than just stopping. As for the mask, I use a regular non-rebreather, but I took one of the diaphrams from an extra mask, and cover the safety. I don't use O2 in bed, rather in the home theatre as not to fall asleep with it on. Plus I was getting attacks every three hours, and did not want to stay in bed where the kids could get at me... Might as well be entertained while suffering, right? I just did not want to over use the O2. Most of the time one will do the trick. Two will definately. If it came to three, I'd use Zomig or Imitrex, but thankfully it has not come to that. Again, thanks for the support and feedback...

| Don't actually use the strap with the mask, cut it off. The mask will fall away should you doze off.

| Now _THAT'S_ experience talking. No euphoria here. When it's over, I'm stenod. If you huff O2 one more time than needed, then you're addicted and need help. NOT my god damned problem. As long as you take a break once an hour or so, and fill your filthy little lungs with some nicotine laden toxins, and a few good huffs of acid rain and local smog (along with requisite nitrogen mix,) you'll be good to go.0.0.0000000 You may be able to hurt your lungs with O2, but........you'd really have to TRY HARD to do any real damage. Unless you're already in such poor shape your last breath was a token of Darwin's Lotto. Free O2 stuff available, cheap. RJ

As it is of utmost importance the breath undiluted oxygen, I'm loath to cutting the strap. How can you reach a tight fit by merely holding the twisted piece of plastic crap against your face? In fact, for me it's time to discard a mask when the strap has lost its elasticity. If you're afraid of falling asleep, hold a brick between your knees. When it falls on your feet you'll sure wake up again. PFNADs, Ueli

I have heard about O2 saturation. Thats why some docs who are clueless about CH wont prescribe it at 15LPM. shit, i even had to do some sweet talking to get my DME company to give me a regulator that would go that high. I dont know too much about it, but I have read some research that says O2 saturation is kind of like the bends. (when you depressurize too quickly). I have no idea if that is correct. I start my O2 at 15 LPM, and then when i am calmed down and not dancing, my breathing slows down quite a bit, so i reduce to 8 - 11 lpm. Like lots of other people here, when in cycle i can get hit as many as 7 times overnight. I huff O2 each time, have never had any probs. PF wishes, and welcome Jester. BMonee

Ueli, how can you Possibly talk about a tight fit when you have 30 years worth of tree bark sprouting from your face?? Take a shave, and try a Clustermasx In this vale Of toil and sin The head grows bald But not the chin. Burma Shave. RJ

| IMHO, it all depends. If you're trying to cure a hangover then ten might be good. But, if you're trying to stop a cluster attack then one is too many. I wouldn't be too concerned about over doing the O2. As soon as the attack is arrested you'll just stop huffing.

We all have an interesting sense of humor here, don't we... Mr Happy, I quit smoking the minute the beast paid me a visit. I figured with the pain, now would be a perfect time to sneak this one in and maybe cut down on the frequency of attacks...

| Listen to Happy here, he knows what he's talking about.. Ok, Respiratory physiology 101 again, there are only 3 things to worry about when using O2: 1. Use with COPD which is emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or any other disease which causes hypercapnia (chronic builup of Carbon Dioxide in the blood). Use of high flow/concentration will cause these people to loose their drive to breathe. I wouldn't worry about this one unless you're constantly a bluish color. 2. Infants and newborns, high amounts of oxygen will cause eye damage in this group. I don't think anyone here fits that description. 3. Extended use of high concentration oxygen. It takes over 15 hours of continuos use of high flow, high concentration to cause lung damage in this scenario, which may be the most relevant to us. To achieve these kinds of flows/concentrations you'd have to have 2 or more large liquid O2 units, or high flow concentrators hooked together, or a S__t load of large tanks. Normal use of O2 will not cause any adverse effects in a healthy person....... OK, I'm done my rant for now

hi, I am pregnant and O2 is pretty much all I can use. I asked my docs if there was a limit to how many times in a day I could use it and they said there was no limit.
