Imitrex and rebounds

I've had CH for about 8 years, and sometime ago settled on Imitrex inhalers as an antidote.  Most of my headaches come while at home where I use oxygen which always works, but just to make sure the headache doesn't come right back I usually take an Imitrex.

About a year ago, I went chronic with 1-3 headaches a day, thus upping my intake of Imitrex.  Although I'd heard about the concept of rebound headaches, the info never seemed entirely clear to me and I continued to take 1-3 Imitrex a day.

All of this changed three weeks ago when a pharmacist warned me I had likely gone chronic due to rebounds from overuse of Imitrex.  At that time I took two courses of Medrol (stretched out to two weeks) at which time my headaches ceased, as I expected they would.  I'm off the Medrol now and it's been three weeks since my last Imitrex and for the first time in a year I've gone three weeks without even a hint of a headache.  If and when I do get a headache, I'll forego the Imitrex in favor of oxygen.

The other piece of advice the pharmacist gave me was to not just go to a neurologist, but seek out a specialized headache clinic.  Eventually I found a neurologist/headache specialist with an international reputation dealing with clusters.  I see this doctor tomorrow and I'll share with you what he has to say that may be of use to others.

Makes me wonder if your pharmacist graduated from the Wingate School of Pharmacy - a place where students are matched up with people like us.

Regardless, you have a friend in your pharmacist.  Hang on to him/her!

I was Dx with "Triptan Rebound". I was doing 3 - 8 shots a day. But now, thanks to Histamine, I don't need the Trex like I used to  Grin
