Miracle Melatonin?

I am a 36 year old male who has suffered from episodic cluster headache since the age of 18. In recent years the frequency of the clusters had increased and each cycle became more prolonged. In addition I was getting a lot of background pain (shadows), even when not in a cluster cycle. I used Verapamil at 360mg a day during clusters with some initial success, although I ended up becoming dependent on them to keep the headaches away and as a result was taking Verapamil permanently for 2 years. I used Imigran Injections with 100% success to abort attacks but these began to cause rebound headaches. 13 months ago I was suffering from my worst ever cluster which had lasted 2 months and was destroying my life. My sister had been to the US and on her return had bought some Melatonin to help her Jet Lag. She offered for me to try them to help my sleep. I recalled at the time that some had posted about the benefits of Melatonin for the treatment of cluster headache. I started taking 9mg a night and within 48 hours the headaches stopped. I now take Melatonin at 6mg before bedtime and I have not had a cluster headache for 13 months. I have not had any shadows or background pain for 13 months and despite being told I would NEVER be able to stop taking Verapamil, I am happy to report that I have not taken Verapamil for 13 months or had to use any other medication. I can honestly say I have never felt better. I posted this to try and help others. Please email me if you want to ask any questions. Good luck everyone - James

Many of us (myself included) have found that taking 6-9mg (some take more) about a 1/2 hour to 45minutes prior to bed have Knocked out the night visits and can finally get sleep. With the exception of 8-10 times.....I have slept through the night since August.....Still get hit during the day but my overall quality of life is better because I am not as exhausted all the time.....also it appears that it seemed to regulate something within since for sometime I have not used it and have been able to make it through the night....... I think I may have to start using it again

I've been taking 6 mg of melatonin for 4 nights night. First 2 nights were completely PF. Last night 2 I woke up at 5 am with a headache, both times aborted successfully with O2. 2 nights ago went back to sleep and got another at 6 am. This morning I didn't go back to sleep. But, I got 6 hrs of PF sleep. Can't complain! Ending week 7 of current cycle this weekend. Hoping to end the cycle soon. Jose

Melatonin - the miracle, inexpensive, OTC, all-natural cluster med. If you can't buy it in the UK, order it online from any other country. Nothing's better than a full night's sleep - with no cluster hits! PF Wishes, Kris

I too have been taking 6 to 7.5 mg of melatonin every night along with some benadryl. I have found that to be by far the most effective preventative. I sleep well and dont wake up with CHs much, and when i do they arent that bad. You have to let the melatonin get in your system. Thats why people say to take it about 45 mins before lying down. At least for me, when i take it and go directly to bed, it doesnt work as well. It seems when you are lying down, drugs get into your system much more slowly. So, if you get them everynight, i would take about 7.5 to 9mg of melatonin and mix it with about 50mg of dyphenhydramine (unisom, tylonol pm, benadryl). That combo seriously saved my sanity. Eat a light dinner so your stomach absorbs them quickly at bedtime, and make sure you give 45 mins to an hour. Good luck PF wishes BMonee
