Prednisone/Cortisone Question
« on: Feb 9th, 2005, 10:53am »

Why are we prescribed Prednisone as opposed to another corticosteroid that has no side-effects or much less side effects than Prednisone long-term use?    Why not Cortisone?  They're both in the same family of steroids.    Or has cortisone proven to be worse?

So I guess what I'm asking is why only Prednisone? Is this the only corticosteroid that has proven to break cluster cycles or ease a cycle until preventatives kick in?

Just curious and confused.

From: Robbins, Management of Headache and Headache Medications, 2nd ed.

He doesn't make any comparative comments about side effects but notes that hydrocortisone has fast onset but has a shorter half-life compared to the other forms.

So, longer half-life should translate into longer period of action.

I saw an act of faith today. A man was on his knees, not in a pew in a Church, but in a garden planting seeds. ~~Unknown
