My doctor prescribed Prednisone, 50mg for me today as a preventative med. Haven't taken this before. Anyone give me some insight into this med?

to start?? Prednisone is a corticosteroid which should be used "short term" and tapered.... Many of us will start anywhere from 60-80mg....and taper down to nothing over a couple of weeks...... Used many a time as an agent that will be used to bring a bit of a "break" while preventatives reach a therapeutic level. It was just perscribed as 50 mg daily???? Talk to your doc again then the pharmacist! Good luck Sgt.! E

OK now I am concerned after reading your messages. What is the concern specifically? My doc gave me 50mg to take once a day for five days. Only gave me 5 pills. I wondered why only five as a preventative and he said for me to try it out. I was unsure about taking the med because I think he was also experimenting on me with it. Should I not take it or should I but ask for a higher dose? Sean

This is something that if used short term should not have bad sid effects yet still should be tapered not just stopped abruptly!!

Thanks Eddie for the link, but, the information on that site scared the bejesus out of me. No where did it mention that it should be used as a preventative med for CH. I don't think I am going to try this drug. Just don't get a warm fuzzy about the pills. Have tried Lithium in the past, will ask for that. Thanks Sean

Prednisone can be a godsend while you are waiting for the other meds to kick in...... Just doesn't seem to be perscribed properly. You're not talking about a LONG time on it.....therefore it couldhelp ya in the interim...... Yes there are dangers but there are dangers for everything in life..... Read the other printout.....research the diff prevents and hang in there!! Best! e

The 3 modalities of treatment encompass Acute, Transitional, and Preventative. Imitrex is used as an acute treatment to abort individual attacks. Prednisone is used as a transitional treatment to gain relief while waiting for a preventative treatment to take effect. Verapamil is a preventative treatment that hopefully would allow prevention of the CH cycle. http://www.clusterheadaches.org/conventions/2003/report.htm NY OUCH Convention 2003.

If ALL he gave you was pred, you need to go back there tomorrow. We take Pred as a transitional preventative until our REAL preventative kicks in. Real prevents == lithium, verapamil, topamax, etc...

You need some organized information. Please fire up your printer and download this long article. It's from one of the better headache docs in the country. http://www.headachedrugs.com/pdf/HA2005.pdf

Thanks to all for the article links you gave me. I have learned alot. Today I am seeing a neuro doc. The doc I went to yesterday wanted me to see an expert. I hope this doc is just that. I am going to ask for melatonin, verapamil and a better suited doses of predinisone to help me until the verapamil settles in. This morning was a doozy. 12:30 AM last night a killer 8/9 hit me. Took a shot of Imitrex, 15 minutes later good enough to fall back to sleep. Then at 0530 again this morning another right out of sleep. I was supposed to be up already and out the door by 5 AM. I was knocked out, anyways, held on for dear life until I fell back asleep I guess an hour later, didn't take anything just fought through it. Then woke up again sometime around 8 - 8:30 with another one, tried to fight it again, but, lost and hit myself with another Imitrex. Thats my two for the day! I had to call my boss and tell her I was down for the count today. Thank God she is sympathetic and gives me the time off. I am screwed now for the rest of the day since I used my two shots, one at 12:30 AM and then again the last CH. Staying strong!!!! Many thanks again to all for the information... PFDAN to all!!!!! Sean

went to the neuro doc this afternoon. Good visit. Sounds like he knows what he is talking about, so did I, and with that I think he knew he could talk on a more easier level with me. He gave me more prednisone. After my 50 mg is done, stepping down with 40mg for 4 days, 30mg for 4 days all the way down to 10mg for 4 days and then done. He also said that he did not want to prescrive verapamil to me, so he put me on Depakote, 500mg, taken once every night. Any ideas on this drug. Does it help as a preventative? Eric, as for the little trick about Imitrex, I think I am going to try it out tonight. Sounds like I have to get used to injecting needles alot. But, that pain is nothing compared to my CH pain. Thanks Sean Sean
