Depakote and "alternative therapy"

Hi all, I just got back from the neuro with an Rx for Depakote.  Don't know much about it other than it's typically used for epilepsy.

My main question is, is it necessary to detox from Depakote before starting the "clusterbusters" therapy?    Since I'm about to go down the CB road (via LSA), I don't want to take anything that would interfere with it.

Even if it doesn't interact, I was considering not filling the Depakote anyway, since a quick search of this board didn't give me great confidence that it's helped many folks.  Any thoughts on the general usefulness (or lack thereof) of this drug would be most welcome.

I appreciate the help, as always.

Hi Joe,
I doubt any one can say for sure about dep.and LSA.
I know there have been reports about reactions
between lithium and psylocibin. Given the very low rate
of success reported with depakote,I would urge against
taking it but that is only my opinion.
I am very curious about the results with LSA so
please, whatever the outcome, please keep us posted.

Depakote was a complete waste for me.

From what I understand you should be med free if you go down the shroom road.

My doctor had me try depakote this last time after I told him prednisone made me feel like I was on speed. To tell you the truth, none of the preventatives ever seemed to do much for me (went for about 15 years with no medicines at all) and can't say there was much difference. Now the abortives, that's a whole different story. Oxygen is a miracle for me, and so are the shots (1/2 Imitrex) when I can't get to the oxygen, or on the rare cases oxygen didn't work for me. The only thing I noticed with Depakote, is that I got a lot fewer regular migraines while I was taking it. Because my cycle lasted so long this time (7 months), he wanted to do blood tests to make sure I wasn't hurting my liver. So I just stopped taking it instead.

Like most (if not all) other prevents, Depakote may take a while to work, if it is going to work. Many times needing to up the dose as you go until you get to a therapeutic level. Also, most prevents aren't worth a darn on their own and it usually takes a combo to show decent results.

Yes, you should be depakote free before the shroom (or related) treatment. So...if you are looking at trying it in the near future, I'd stick the script in the drawer for now if you can wait. If you end up on the Depakote, be sure to have regular liver enzyme tests.

if your dr. told you to try the depakote i would try it. i have had success with it in the past in combination with other meds like neurontin and verapamil. i don't like the high doses but i am good with 500mg. the higher doses affected my memory and mood. it also has to be the extended release formulation. so you take it once at night. also don't feel weird about talking about shroom issues with your dr. it's priveledged information anyway. all they can say is i wouldn't recommend doing it but if you are going to then make sure you are not also taking XYZ. i've had conversations about it with my dr. although i never really tried the treatment, unless you count a try in amsterdam that didn't work. oh well
