Grapefruit juice is one of the most studied and talked about foods that interacts with many medicines - its effects are so strong that it is hard to ignore. But there are scores of other food ingredients that have similar effects, but are not included in the warnings:

Quercetrin, Quercetin (apples, onions)
Catechins (tea, grape juice, etc)
Genistein, other soy isoflavones
Sesamin (sesame)
Piperine (black pepper)
Allicin (garlic)
the various fatty acids (too many to mention)

These all affect the activity of gut or liver enzymes - making it rather difficult to predict how much of a medicine will be absorbed, how fast it will be broken down, and what the ultimate blood levels will be.

The key is to maintain a stable diet when going on a medicine - if your metabolism of verap or other drugs is faster or slower than the average person, your dose can be adjusted.  The problem comes when a person is on a dose for a while and changes to the diet double the amount of verap in the blood - very serious.  Definitely avoid grapefruit if on verapamil.

We are good at standardizing medicines, not so good at standardizing patients.

Thank goodness I hate grapefruits, so it won't kill me... Wink

I was actually warned at my pharmacy that drinking grapefruit juice would make my prevention meds less effective.

Glad you posted the warning about grapefruit juice. I'd be willing to bet that many people here had never heard of it. Posting and re-posting information like that is important in keeping everyone up to date. Thanks.
There is a lot of information in the Archives. I wish every one had the time to go there.
But, some of the time the Search feature  doesn't return any results or is so slow that a person can get tired of waiting.
Sometimes it fun just to pick a date at random, open it up and start reading the messages. You may find yourself saying "Hey, I remember forgetting that". Or "I wonder if that old fart died yet?"
