Hi everyone. I've not been on in quite a while but still check the message board every so often. But in case I've missed it, has anyone read about or tried "Coenzyme Q10" or "GelStat Migraine Headache Pain Reliever"? I got my new Prevention magazine today and there are articles on both. Yes, I know it says for "migraines", not CH's, but hey, I'll try anything if it works! You can check out the GelStat on their websit www.gelstat.com Preventin Magazine is usually pretty reliable with their promos

Not proven to help in clusters, but it does help migraines and may help in clusters. CoQ10 can be a boost to the mitochondria, which are messed up in both types of headache. Quote: 1: Bianchi A, Salomone S, Caraci F, Pizza V, Bernardini R, D'Amato CC. Role of magnesium, coenzyme Q10, riboflavin, and vitamin B12 in migraine prophylaxis. Vitam Horm. 2004;69:297-312. | The mitochondrial disturbances seen in migraine (and partially corrected by CoQ10) may also be present in cluster headaches: Quote:J Neurol Sci. 1997 Feb 27;146(1):73-80. Related Articles, Links Quantitative analysis of skeletal muscle bioenergetics and proton efflux in migraine and cluster headache. Lodi R, Kemp GJ, Montagna P, Pierangeli G, Cortelli P, Iotti S, Radda GK, Barbiroli B. Dipartimento di Medicina Clinica e Biotecnologia Applicata D. Campanacci, Universita di Bologna, Italy. Phosphorus MR spectroscopy (31P-MRS) was used to quantify skeletal muscle bioenergetics and proton efflux in 63 patients with migraine (23 with migraine without aura, MwoA, 22 with migraine with aura, MwA, and 18 with prolonged aura or stroke, CM) and in 14 patients with cluster headache (CH), all in an attack-free period. At rest mitochondrial function was abnormal only in CM, as shown by a low phosphocreatine (PCr) concentration. At the end of a mixed glycolytic/aerobic exercise all three migraine groups showed a significantly smaller decrease of cytosolic pH compared to controls with a similar end-exercise PCr breakdown, while end-exercise pH was normal in cluster headache patients. The normal rate of proton efflux in all headache groups suggests that the reduced end-exercise acidification was due to a reduction of glycolytic flux in migraine patients. The maximum rate of mitochondrial ATP production (Qmax), calculated from the rate of post-exercise PCr recovery and the end-exercise [ADP], was low in cluster headache patients as well as in migraine patients except MwoA. In migraine the degree of the mitochondrial impairment, that apparently is associated with a reduced glycolytic flux, is related to the severity of the clinical phenotype. |

I seem to have some benefit from CO Q-10 @300 mg per day, but too early to tell for sure. John

My neuro has me on coQ10 and magnesium as well as my prevents and abortives. One thing I noticed is the price difference in coQ10 between NY, CT and TX. A MAJOR cost difference?? Much less expensive in TX and I have no idea why but I'm not complaining since I live here. p.m. me if you have any further questions regarding the coQ10. good luck! renee

Part of the cost problem is due to the fact that all CoQ10 comes from a few manufacturers in Japan. Lots of companies repackage CoQ10 in various formulations, but not much competition among the producers of the raw ingredient. I buy from a wharehouse club (Costco), where the prices are very reasonable compared to other retailers. Curious that you mention Texas - Kaneka, one of the Japanese companies is building a CoQ10 production facility in Pasadena, Texas.

If I remember correctly, which would be a miracle in itself, the cost of coQ10 in CT and NY was 3 to 4 times what it is in TX. I take 300mg coQ10 daily. Renee
