tizanidine hydrochlorid aka Zanaflex??

My doctor (not my neuro) wants to give me pain meds to get rid of shadows.  Ive took a couple with no results.  Yesterday he prescribed me tizanidine hydrochloride or Zanaflex.  I have a drug book and it says it is a skeletal muscle relaxant used to treat muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injuries.  Has anyone took this before?  What did it do to you?  I would rather live with the shadows than take something thats going to really mess me up.  Sometimes I think my doctor is wack but he atleast works with me and lets me try drugs to see what works.  This however was his idea.  Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi ArCane,

I can't speak to this particular drug - never heard of it.

However, during my first cycle - before I was properly diagnosed - I suffered a constant shadow in my L. eye/temple.  I remember telling my doc that it felt like a muscle in my temple was in constant spasm.  He prescribed Flexoril (sp?) thinking it couldn't hurt me.  It didn't hurt me, but it also didn't help.

I don't think you have anything to lose by trying it, but a skeletal muscle relaxant ain't gonna help much with constricting your vessels.  However, it might relax you, and in that respect help the shadows.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Agreed. It's sort of like treating a hangnail when your arm has been hanging by a fleshy thread.

A link:

http://www.drugs.com/zanaflex.html

It is a muscle relaxer , but it does it by blocking  nerve (pain) impulses to the brain. It works a little differently than most muscle relaxants. So maybe the mechanism of how it works rather than the muscle realxing result is what your doc is looking at.

I took it for about 5 months a few years ago,  and it didn't do much for me. My script was written by my neuro. And i believe it has to build up a little in your system before it works.

And it made me tired too.

Most importantly, if your unsure about it ask him to SPECIFICALLY tell you what he is expecting Zanaflex to do for you. I always do this and sometimes it annoys the docs becasue it requires extra time, but I don't care. Smiley  If I'm putting something in my body I want to know what it is going to do.

PF vibes for you!
