imitrex- the pill

It's been awhile since I've had these so bad, er the headaches. Usually or well for the past 4 to 5 years, I try to work through the cycles without medication, my belief that "it" has to run its' course and have been lucky these past few years with cycles only lasting 2 to 8 weeks anually. When I tried the medicine route the doctor proclaimed me cronic as the cycle went on for a year. Anyhow I'm in the middle of a cycle now and had a couple of those 4-5 hour suicidle wammers and called my doctor to get Imitrrex. I wound up with tablets which is ok for now the one pill I took went to work in less than ten minutes which is better than the hell of the past two days.
My question to this board is why on this box does it say Not to split the tablets? Will air destroy the medicine? Is the sumatriptan not evenly mix in the tablet?  any response would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board wander.
I have no idea why the box says that and can only guess.
If you split the tablets you would get twice the "reliefs" per box.
That would be the last thing the drug manufacturer would want. Cuts their profit in half.
You might try the injectionable Imitrex. There is an 'imitrex tip' button on the left side of your screen. It will allow you to use one-third or one-half of each injection.

I was told by a doctor to split them.  I think Glaxo makes more money if you don't split them. Grin  Have you tried amerge or zomig instead of imitrex?

I've split, crushed, chopped, snorted, and injected Imitrex.

Yes, I've done the injections by the dozens and have also did the Zomeg. Any of the triptans will work for me in this early stage of the game. Going to see the doc tomorrow hopefully get a steriod shot and some varapamil to add to my arsenal and with a prayer this cycle will be over soon. I will go ahead and split a tablet to see if it does work, maybe even thirds I just hope I'm nearer the end of a cycle than the beginning. I'm just scared because I know how easy I've had it for awhile and how nasty things could get. The people around me see what I go through here lately and I tell I've had it worse and they shake their heads in wonderment as if "you should do something about that" and I just grin and go on. Twenty five years I've had these damn things and for the first ten didn't know what the hell was going on. Had evry tooth in my head yanked out ( have some really nice dentures though) until I met a Dr. Kudrow in L.A. who said his dad had these things Dr. Kudrow Jr. being a specialist in headaches. Of course this was way before any of the triptans were around or internet message boards such as this. My first treatment was verapamil, oxygen and lidocaine apply with long cotton swabs. lIFE DOES GO ON, THOUGH. Thank you for your responces and kind support.

Just a side note here. While I do not believe that
imitrex is one of them, some meds are designed to be
slow,delayed or sustained release.Therefore,with SOME
meds splitting, chewing, could indeed result in an over
dose situation.Be safe,know your meds.
