Looking for O2 mask information

Hi All

Yesterday I went and picked up my first tank of O2, just in time for two ch attacks last night. The results of the O2 were fantastic. But when I picked it up they didn't have a non re-breather mask for me just a regular one that has two sets of holes on the side. So when I breath in I am also sucking in air and when I breath out the O2 is still pumping in and I am thinking am I wasting half of my O2 ?

Does a non re-breather mask have the O2 go into a bag and when you breath out it goes out a check valve and then closes and when you breath in does it stay closed and you breath in straight O2 from the bag,  is that how it works ????

Thanks to all that reply

Bingo! That's pretty much it. With a regular mask you can accomplish a similar effect by taping over the holes in the mask to stop the inhaling of outside air, inhale from the modified mask, then pull the mask away from your face to exhale. Repeat this process - hit from the mask, pull the mask away and exhale.

The main idea is to try to breathe pure 100% oxygen. The non-rebreather mask makes doing this easier, but it can be done with a regular mask.

dang!... y'all are doin' REAL good... I should have said that on the o2 page....

It does not matter...really... HOW you get a BUNCH of oxygen into your bloodstream,  just that you DO get it into yer BrainPan(tm) as soon as possible and that you keep trying to breathe DEEP and as SLOW as POSSIBLE.....(yeah, we know: SLOW is not usually what you want to hear above K-8 )

just keep trying...it IS a blessing for most....

Hi All

I just got home from work with only one attack.

Thank you all very much for the info my next 2 questions were, one exactly that marfanoidus asked !

Is it better to breath through the mouth or nose or deep breaths or shallow or which is best ?

Thanks again for all of the responses and my second question since I have a lousy mask is that the hose that goes into the mask has two holes in it ?

So I can breath normally with the O2 shut off !!!!
That right there tells me that I am only getting again 50% of my O2 even when the side vents are taped up.

So now what tape those holes too ?

Cheers,
Dave

I don't understand. Are you saying the actual hose has holes in it? If so, that is a defective hose and should be replaced, or cut off the portion with the holes in it and reconnect the hose to the mask.

If the 02 is shut off and the mask with the holes taped over is pressed hard against your face you should not be able to breath normally.

I agree that slow and deep is best. I do it through my nose, but that's how I am comfortable. I don't think it makes any difference (mouth or nose) as long as it's slow and deep.

You can pick up a non-rebreather mask at the med supply store or online for just a few bucks, I recomend it.  You may also want to get a bubbler (humidifier), mine cost me about $40 but you might find 'em cheaper.

Sorry - not true in Canada and Dave is in Canada.  For reasons beyond our comprehension, non-rebreather masks have suddenly become prescription items.   Roll Eyes  As our illustrious OUCH Canada president says 'you can buy enough aspirin on the shelf to do serious damage to yourself but try and get an oxygen mask....'
It's ridiculous, I know, but seriously....dood....come over to OUCH Canada's message board - we can help you!!
