Thanks for this resource. Iget great relief from Imitrex Inj.. Relief in 5-8 min. But My Neuro Doc won't let me have more than 2 doses a day. With 4 to 6 attacks daily I'm now splitting doses (an idea from this site, thank-you very much) but still I go through at least 2 brutal attackes daily without relief. There are no side effects worse than the attacks I can see. Has anyone been successful in getting more prescribed? Christian

I've gotten more prescribed but insurance won't cover more than four injections per month. Right now I'm digging deep in my pockets. Just paid $760 for 12 injections last night. Better money spent than the bags I bought in college. Good luck.

Because many folks have multiple attacks a day, we have seen many messages here reporting the use of multiple doses per day. I have found one report out of Italy saying that no bad outcomes were seen in such a group of patients. I found many abstracts in PubMed on triptan safety which your doc should see for himself. I'm posting one such report. Suggest you print it out and take it to him. But to answer you question: many folks have been able to get more Imitrex approved by their doc and insurance company. Headache. 2004 Feb;44(2):178-82. Related Articles, Links Frequent triptan use: observations on safety issues. Robbins L. Department of Neurology, Rush Medical College, Chicago, Ill. 60062, USA. OBJECTIVE: To examine the safety of frequent triptan use over extended periods. For a small group of patients with refractory migraine plus chronic daily headache, triptans are effective. METHODS: This retrospective study primarily evaluated the cardiac safety of daily triptan use in 118 patients and, in addition, hematologic tests were assessed. Each patient had utilized a triptan for a minimum of 4 days per week for at least 6 months. Patients with rebound headache had been withdrawn from the triptans. Most patients (97 of 11 averaged 1 tablet daily; most would occasionally go for several days without a triptan. Forty patients had taken a triptan for 6 months to 2 years, 37 patients from 2 to 4 years, and 41 for 4 or more years. RESULTS: Routine hematologic tests were performed periodically on all patients, and no abnormalities were attributable to triptans. Almost all patients had an electrocardiogram, and no abnormal electrocardiograms were felt to be related to triptans. Cardiac echocardiography was performed in 57 patients. The 10 abnormal echocardiograms were not due to triptans. All 20 cardiac stress tests revealed normal findings. Adverse events were minimal; 9 patients described fatigue due to triptans, and 5 had mild chest tightness. CONCLUSION: This long-term study of 118 patients indicates that frequent triptan use may be relatively safe. PMID: 14756859 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

It's possible but difficult to get more than two a day. I know that is not nearly enough. Think of oxygen also, which is an effective abortive. Together you may be able to have ammunition for the attacks. If doc will not up script on trex, then ask for oxygen to abet the trex as a second abortive. It works for most. Kevin M

The hardest/longest and most difficult cycles that I experienced was when using multiple and unlimited amounts of imitrex. Heck, I was quick draw McGraw with the injections. It was hard to resist when the headache was aborted in 5 minutes or less. In my case using this amount was counter productive. Imitrex can be a double edged sword with rebounds. See if perhaps you can combine some O2 for aborting--then imitrex if that doesn't work. Try some melatonin at night @9mg (+ - ) one hour before bedtime. Good luck, John
