one coming on

Hi there...this is Shani.  It's about 10:45pm and I am shadowing pretty bad.  I am absolutely terrified to go to sleep because I know I am going to get a CH.  I am exhausted but I don't want to go to sleep.  WHAT SHOULD I DO???  I have no more abortive's left, no Zomig nasal, no Imitrex injection...nothing but Vicodine & Coedine.

My 13 yr. old is telling me to go to the ER but we all know how helpful they are, especially if I'm not full blown, which I'm not just yet.  If I do go to sleep I can't have my husband drive me to the hospital because he needs to stay home with the baby.

Any suggestions?  I am really scared right now.  Thank you everyone.

Positive light and energy to all.

Shani

try a cold shower on the head

When i am shadowind at work, i take a walk on a walk-in freezer (-4 F ) (-20C) and it helped me.

or bowl of water + ice - dip your head in it and dance 30sec. not too long.  pull off your head, wait, then put it back in when your head re-heat.

redo - don't get hippothermy in the head

I know, I'm late...you could start by getting rid of those narcs.  For the future, the fire department could very well become your best friend in situations like this.  I would suggest establishing a rapport with them letting them know your potential needs prior to actually needing their assistance.  Then, when you get in this type of situation, just have someone take you down there, jump on the O2, and you should be ok (hopefully).  Often, their just sitting at the station just looking for something to do anyway.  Try as you may to get any type of success from the ER.  It's hit and miss at best.

Other than that, ice packs (frozen peas), hot, strong coffee, hot or cold shower (which ever helps you), etc...

Finally, don't let yourself run out of rescue meds.  I do not abort every single attack, I abort the ones that put me way over the top.  It's not fool proof, but it does stretch the meds.

Good luck!

Shani,
I don't think there is a CH here that hasn't had that experience of being ready for bed but aware that the beast is lurking and that it is going to happen anywhere from an hour to two hours into your sleep. If you are like me, those middle of the night attacks are always a bit more ferocious than their daytime countrparts. That may be because they get a head start (no pun intended) It is a lousy feeling.

Here is my strategy: I use Carfergot (in this case as a preventative). I take one at bedtime. I take a very hot shower about an hour before bedtime. Four days ago I started taking melatonin an hour before bedtime as well. I am also on a Betamethason taper and verapamil.

Recently had a rough night, but I had not used the cafergot. Since then I have added cafergot (again as a propyhlatic -- not as an abortive) to my daily regimen with the result of 3 days pain free (the longest I've had since this episode began.)

cafergot should not be taken in close proximity to taking any of the triptan drugs.

Your post does not mention Oxygen. If you have not tried this I strongly urge you to do so. I keep my tank at bedside and turn it on immediatley after being awakened. I keep a washcloth soaked in ice water in a large Starbuck's insulated coffee cup. It stays cold all night.

Like another poster has aready said...I never not have Immigram (pill form) ready, and would happily exceed dosage if I got slammed. Thats my personal choice and I do not recommend it. However, by starting the cafergot, I preclude later use of the triptan. That's OK with me as long as I have the oxygen nearby.
 Get the Oxygen.

Call your doc for a refill first thing in the AM.

The form found here under "Emergency Room Protocol" would have been helpful to you.

I have had CH for 25yrs. and I have tryed everything!!!It seems that most everyone is against narc. I do know there not good for us, but at least there is some help from them when nothing else helps at all! As for me, when I have a CH I dont care what it is just as long as it helps any! If it were me I would take the narc. and talk to the doc. in the morn.
