Hi everyone. This is Shani again. I wanted to share my ER story with all of you. It is rare that I allow my self to go to the ER so when I do the Beast is REALLY bad and my pain is at a k9 (never k10 cuz I won't consider suicide, my family is too important to me and I know that my cycle will pass).
I ended up having to go to the ER yesterday morning around 6:30am. The beast came on so hard. He was relentless. When I went in I gave the admitting nurse a piece of paper that had all of my information on it - like who I am, what I suffer from, what meds I take, who my neuro is, what works and doesn't work for me, etc. and that I needed O2 immediately to stop the CH. They were all very kind and sympathetic but when the doc (he was great too except for this) got into my room, which was right as I was walking in, he told me that O2 wouldn't work. He offered morphine instead. I told him that morphine doesn't work on me. He then told me that he was going to give me some other med. I honestly don't remember the name except that it starts with a "D" and it isn't demeral.
When I told the nurse, an hour later, that I still had the headache the doc offered to give me another shot. NO WAY...I knew I'd be even more jello then I already was. His other option was to give me Percocet to take home. I agreed to do that just so I could go home. All day I felt as though I had just had surgery because it felt like I had been given an anestetic (I think I mispelled that too!)
Well, as we all know, it didn't take the beast out of me. It only made it so I didn't care! It also made me so sick. They gave me Phenagren (I spelled that wrong) so I wouldn't throw up but I was still very ill all day long. 16 hours after that ordeal the beast came back. Luckily the Zomig Nasal worked this time.
I wish that the ER docs would just listen to us. We have been through this enough times that we know what works for us and what doesn't. I didn't have the energy to argue the point of needing O2 rather than a narcotic. I chose to go alone because I refused to drag my 3 year old daughter out of bed for something traumatic, so this meant that my husband needed to stay home with her (he hates having me go alone!). It's bad enough that she has to go through this with me at home. I don't want her and won't allow her to see me in the hospital.
Anyway, today is a better day so far...it's only 9:30am. I am confident that one day things will get better - hell, I know that they will. My cycles don't last forever.

Glad you feel better! Do you have a regular doc? Something that some of us do is have a ER strategy with a script or letter from the doc instructing the ER staff on what to do.

One more "Why I don't go to the ER" story....
Was it dilaudid? If so, it's synthetic morphine.... Very heavy duty shit.

If it would help, i'd take it everyday.
I wouldn't be going back to that ER again or i'd be looking for a neuro to write you out some 'orders' for the ER doc the next time you have to go.

It's just as inneffective a any other narcotic... Stadol is stronger, and more effective for ch but it's still relatively inneffective as well.
I can't believe they wouldn't administer O2...
Sounds like the ER do works on commission.

Stadol (IV fed) is still no match for my CH attacks...
Even at 3 mg doses.

Sorry to hear the hospital is not much help. I am sure you have read in here before about welders oxygen. I have leased a couple of large bottles, and one little tiney one, purchased a regulator, and made a hose with a thumb activated air valve on the end. A 10 dollar re-fill will last me a couple of weeks when Im in a really bad streatch. 5 bucks a week isnt too bad to be able to sleep. Its a bit costly getting started, but after ya get everything together, your set for life. I grab the oxygen as soon as I feel the very slightest twinge, and it usually aborts the beast.

I'm definetly into doing the O2 thing. I just haven't been able to get on my feet enough this week to do the calls and stuff.
I do have a regular neuro. He's the one who told me to tell the ER to administer the O2. I told them that and they still wouldn't listen.
They might have given me dilaudid. It put me in a state for the rest of the day. I felt like I had been put under and was taken out or something. Bleh...don't like feeling like that.
Does anyone know what DHE is? I've heard it mention in treatments before and I am unsure of it. All I know is that you can get it when you go to the ER or they have to put you in the hospital for it. I am not a fan of taking things that I don't know anything about. I want to be as informed as possible.

morphine and demerol wont touch my ch but dilaudid 4mg kicks its but every time. There have been plenty of times that I have wished I could take it daily. However the patch did work wonders for me.

Hello Shani
Sorry you are having such a horror of a time, and you join a long list of people who get no joy whatever from ER/A&E departments. One day they'll learn we hope!
DHE (dihydroergotamine ) is administered via IV on an inpatient basis, usually for 3-5 days. There are people here who have had it who hopefully will be along soon and post their experiences, but I know that some have found it gives them a desperately needed "pain holiday" but no more than that.
Some have found it kept the attacks away for several weeks afterwards or even broke the cycle completely, some sadly found that only a couple of days after the IV was stopped that the HA's came back with a vengeance.
It would be great if you could get the 02 to use at home, for me it is my life saver and comfort to have it there

DHE is a medication that broke what seemed like an endless cycle (9 months) and followed with a couple of PF years.

Demerol is weaker than morphine, Dilaudid is ten times stronger than morphine, Fentynal 100 X stronger.
Sorry to here about your experence. Try getting a letter or script note from your Neuro stating my patient is here please provide 100% O2 via Non Rebreather.
