Hi, I'm new to the board, but have had CH's for about 6 yrs now.  Recently I was prescribed Zomig 5mg NS, and have had some relief, and even completely aborted a couple CH's.  My question is this.  Does anybody ever try to use Zomig as a preventative?  My CH's have been pretty regular at 1 per day, at around 1:30 am.  I am considering trying the Zomig before bed, and seeing if that prevents the CH.  Has anybody else tried this?  If so with what positive, or negative effects?  Any input/suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks all;
Andy

Zomig is an ABORTIVE...... you should NEVER use an abortive as a preventive.  But hey, I'm no doc.  Personally, I'd use some melatonin before bed, that might just do the trick, and it's cheaper besides.

Yeah, tried the melatonin 12mg thing, and not much success.  Even when I'm not having a CH I still  found myself waking up instinctively at 0130.  Again thanks for the input.  As I said it's greatly appreciated.

Did you try it at lower doses?  Like 1.5-3 mg?  Or how about time-releas melatonin, that will give you a longer sleep period.

I did try it at 9mg, but not as low as 1.5-3mg.  And I wasn't even aware of the time release form.  But I will certainly give it a try.  Anything is worth a shot when dealing with these things.  Thomas is the theory regarding use of melatonin that it just helps us sleep through an attack, or does it actually prevent one?

For me, it eliminated my night time hits.   As you know there is no sleeping through a ch attack.

last week I was given Zomig 2.5mg for the first time. I swear the episode gets in the expresslane the minute it passes my lips or maybe I take it to late.  It does seem to help shorten the duration to under an hour but the intensity is still the same.
     This is the first time i've tried anything like this and I was getting hammered with 2 hour 9's before. I was taking advils and such by the fistful before and making it worse so I realy don't know if Zomig is working or not. Thats the only thing I take now and I take it sparingly..

Having read some of Thomas's previous posts on other threads I think I can safely say the Zomig is a pretty good abortive drug.  For it all depends on how quick I can inhale (NS form).  If I'm quick and can feel a CH coming on and give my self a dose it has been able to abort the CH completely in about 20 min, with it peaking at only about a 5.  This has happend twice.  If I don't get to it till the CH has taken off, and hit 8, 9, 10, then it just seems to take the edge off a bit, and shorten the attack.  Usually my attacks on this cycle have been 3 hrs.  With the Zomig they've been shortened to about 1-1.5hrs.  None the less a huge improvement.  Thomas I'll try the melatonin at a lesser dose and also try to find the extended release form.  Thanks again.

Hello there Andy

The official line is that Triptans should never be used as preventives.

But......

I have taken a Zomig pill for my worst hits while using 02 as I believe it sometimes can block a subsequent attack that night.

The big risk though is that if you have already used a triptan as a preventive and it doesn't work (which often it doesn't) you are heading for trouble if you get more attacks in the 24 hour period and triptans are your only abortive as you could be left with nothing to take, or risk overdosing the triptans which is REALLY dangerous

I would say it is not working for you...  How long into the attack are you waiting to take it?

I usually won't take it until I know I'm sure its the real thing. A couple times I've taken it earlier and it seemed to work. Got just a brief , minor hit and that was it.
     Its a mental thing with me I realy don't want to take anything that may extend the cycle.
     I've learned alot about other techniques in the past week like water and exercise that seem to help with the intensity and usually will kill it in its tracks. If that doesn't work then I know its coming so a Zo may be my next step. Yea maybe I'm just taking them to late.
