Discover Article: Transcranial Mag Stimulator

The August 2004 issue of Discover has a 2-page article on Migraines, focused on the 'Transcranial Magnetic Stimulator', built by NeuraLieve.

75% success in clinical trials, they say.  If they manage to zap it during the aura phase, they say it is 100% successful.  No side effects, no rebounds.

The prototype is a rather bulky device that fits against your skull... pull the trigger... presto.

Obvious Q... wonder what it does for CH?

I see a study grant out there to:
Yousef Mohammed, Neurology, Ohio State University

Trial has been going on for about a year.

------------------------
NeuroPace seems to be NeuraLieve's parent company.
http://www.neuropace.com/

They are in trials with a more invasive (implantable leads) device for the treatment of epilepsy.

Good to hear about this.  Similar things have been done for depression, with good results.  The strength or frequency might have to be tweaked a bit, but this could someday lead to a good abortive.

ONSI .... same thing !

Been there ~ Done that

Unsolved

Exception:
"a) the ability to view the patient's electrocorticographic (ECoG) activity real-time;"
The ONSI I had would NOT do this.

Is it Un?  I believe you are looking at the implantable epilepsy device.
The device in Discover is not implantable.

"When held against a persons head, the magnetic pulse creates an electric current in the nerves of the head and the nneurons of the cerebral cortex, forcing them to fire prematurely..."

"Upton held the magnetic stimulator next to Hughe's head and pressed the button, sending out two pulses five seconds apart.  Hughes says he felt a 'surge, like a rush of energy' entering his head.  Minutes later, after a second round, the headache was gone."

Small handheld unit goes into trials at the end of this year.

I had more electricity surging through my head than you could imagine in March. Weather it's implanted or not ... don't think any electricity is gonna help with my pain (unless it knocks me out)  Undecided
