Treatment: Manipulitation of Neck Muscles

I am new to this site and message board; please excuse any errors in protocol(s). I am 57 years old and have suffered with CH since my early 30s. Nothing really helped relieve the symptoms or seemed to prevent CHs from coming back. I have been having CHs for about 4 months now. My neurologist suggested that I try physical theraphy of neck vertebrae and vertebrae to just below the shoulders. Six sessions and my CHs and minor headaches are gone. No proof of anything but feeling free sure feels good. Just thought I would share the experience. Paul Cz

Welcome, Paulcz! There's been a good deal of discussion on the neck (and chiropractic) and I would summarize the general consensus as: it doesn't get to the root of the problem. Most people would go farther and say it doesn't help at all. The hypothalamus is disordered, and the neck is at best (or is worst?) a trigger for some people. I get chiropractic to help keep my neck from totally locking up - I have neck problems year round, but especially in cycle. Chiropractic has never had a noticeable impact on my headaches, and my chiro has done a wide variety of physical therapy treatments on me. There are a few research articles on spinal problems triggering clusters, but that seems to be only in a few people. For me, clusters are like a clock and calendar - when the days reach a certain length, my body chemistry gets whacked, my sleep gets disturbed, and then the clusters start. The pain of clusters is so bad that people try all kinds of treatments. When a cycle stops, it is natural to associate whatever was being tried with an end to pain. When the next cycle starts, people go back to their 'effective treatment' and usually are dissapointed. But maybe for you, this does help.

Every time I go into a cycle (from the first CH until the last) I can feel & hear a crunching kinda sound in my neck when I turn my head from side to side. Years ago I tried the Chiropractic treatments and it seemed to help reduce the frequency of CH's. So the next two cycles, I went straight to the Chiroprator figuring it would help. After tons of $$ worth of weekly treatments, I realized it wasn't helping at all. Sometimes you find something that seems to work but just end up dissapointed the next time around when you find out the Beast was just playing tricks on you. Glad to hear the Beast has decided to leave you alone. I hope it stays gone.

Thanks to all for the replies. Sorry for not returning sooner. My son just had major knee surgery. As of today I am still free of CHs. I hope it stays away for years. I realize that the neck manipluation itself is way too simple a cure or relief. The interesting situation is that normal headaches have not occurred. I teach college math and know that even a high positive correlation does NOT indicate any causeality. Thanks for the comments. Paul C
