Zomig????????

Good morning,
Went to the Neuro yesterday and one of the things perscribed was Zomig.
First one she gave me was in her office around 11 ish... took 5 minutes and the headache was gone!
I was actually pretty near pain free until about 10 that last night when one attacked! I took another and it cleared up again in nearly 5 minutes. To me amazing!!
I had my first good night sleep in weeks!! ( I hope this is not rubbing it in!!! sorry)
I was told NOT to exceed 2 within a 24hr period. Well @ 8:20 a vicious one came  hammer so despite wanting to take that wonder drug I didn't went about my perscribed routine and although it is starting to subside (less intense) still damn hurts!
Is 22 hrs. long enough?? Will I really hurt myself if I take one in that period instead? confused
I know we are not Dr's here but sufferers and supporters but still curious of opinions.
Dr. also told me to tak e a day or 2 off to get used to some of the meds (Depakote, the steroids and the if neededs)
I am hoping to get myself back on track and back to working ASAP and that will entail a much earlier schedule. How does one change that once they started the med schedule at a later time. How do you switch. I guess have to suck it up until I reach that time so to be ready if needed.
Hope this was coherent. My brain really isn't yet.
Thanks!

Zomig is good stuff...22 hours, 24 hours, what's the difference?  I think the "don't exceed" warnings are to prevent you from taking 3 or 4 doses in say 16 or 18 hours-a clear exceeding of the dosage "limit".

The first time I took Zomig it kicked my HA in about 10-15 minutes, but I also seemed to have about a day and a half PF...

Incidentally, I took 50 mg of Imitrex recently in a pinch, and although it seemed to work OK did seem as good as Zomig! Smiley

The reason that I prefer zomig over imitrex is the amount of time between attacks is MUCH longer with the zomig.

I've never had Zomig.... Glad to hear it works so well...
The only advantage I can think of for trex is that you (I) can get 6 effective doses out of a stat pack with the shot splitting technique.

Hi E-Double

sorry to say that (I will may get flamed but what follows are facts) but the body can't assimilate an oral drug in 5 minutes -15 or 20 minutes that can happens but not 5 minutes!  Five minutes is the time CPH are gone -or you were at the end of your attack - have your doc considered CPH?.

By the way 3-5 min is the time an imitrex injection take effect. think about it.

I can only tell you how long it appeared to me. when you are going through these things just having peace of mind may have been a part of it. It was my very first time taking any kind of medication so this may have been a factor as well.
Either way since then the PAIN has been alleviating after 15 or so minutes though the "ache" remains. Atleast I can function and that's all I care about.
Another thing to take into account is that No two people have the same metabolic rate. From a scientifc background I can tell you that (loosely speaking) there are so many different variables to consider or that are not considered when drugs are taken and those who take certain drugs/meds may have immediate results when the "statistics" state there will not be and vice-a- versa.
Thanks and good luck to you.

Did you get the Zomig pills or Nasal Spray?

I use the NS and it works in about 5 - 7 minutes for me about 95% of the time.

I suppose your number of doses per day depends on the docs opinion of whether your body could handle it or not or he could have been going by the dosing recommendations.  My neuro told me not to do more than 3 a day.  There have been days I used 3 and was REALLY tempted to try 4.

I don't know about being pain free for longer, cause I never used Imitrex.  I know on a bad day, I can pop a Zomig and an hour or so later have another bad attack.  The documentation says you can hit it again after 2 hours, but no more than 10mg in a 24 hour period.  I usually try to wait it out with O2 and see just how bad the pain will get before I dose.  Don't want to waste the precious little things.

As for the if neededs?  Are these perchance pain killers, like demerol or percocet or something.  Do not get in the habit of using them on a regular basis.  They can cause rebound pain.  I must admit, I have had a few attacks that I used O2, Zomig, 50mg of phenergan and 200mg of demerol and it still didn't stop the pain.  I ended up outside screaming for my better half to please just shoot me.  Luckily we live out in the country.

Good luck with it.  PF wishes for all.

The if needes were :
If the zomig (the disolving type) doesn't kick in quick enough take a vioxx then a fiorecet. and if I am still bugging out to take a Xanax just to calm down.

I honestly didn't want to take any narcotics because of the rebound factor. I already tried super potent Vicadins that I actually had for a back injury and although they knocked my ass out I got hit with a bigger and badder one than originally.

I don't know....
My big thing is wondering how I can function on this stuff. Makes me a bit foggy. I need to be sharp but I also need massive amounts of patience. One thing these headaches do not permit!  laughI haven't gone back to work since monday and will attempt to do so tomorrow.
I am a Behavior Analyst working  privately with children who have autism in early intervention. I supervise several cases, consult and Lecture. What to do...
Private means : NO work = No pay!!
Brutal especially since I'm saving for a wedding ... if she'll still have me LOL!

Kinda wish I were out in the country... I'd be screaming like crazy! Maybe I can time my screams to when the drag racers ride down my street.  Grin

There is also a zomig quick release tablet that is available in some areas, that may be why it is working so quickly.???????

Xanax will not cause any pain of any sort...
The narcotics however are useless. The only thing they can do is take the edge off.
I've got a bottle of liquid oxy contin which is about the most powerful shit you'd ever want to take, and it doesn't kill a headache. Nice buzz, but useless against a ch.

My son was banged up really bad last year and was given Oxycontin and Tramadol for a while.  He was in a car wreck that snapped his femur and had to have a rod put in it to hold it together.  Anyways, it seemed to work very well for his pain.  I still have quite a bit of it left, so I experimented with it.  Neither one did much of anything for me, not even the buzz thing, but like I said before, it takes a LOT of any drug to put me down.

Zomig NS and O2 are the only abortives I've tried and they seem to work fairly well.   So Far.

Well, don't try taking ALOT of oxycontin!
It's pretty easy to get rid of the headaches that way, but you'll be dead.

Ahhhh....Zomig....the first Triptan I ever received....and the first thing to ever REALLY stop a CH. It has special place in my Medicine chest.

Zomig comes in 2.5mg and 5 mg pills.....the 2.5 works for me. I wonder what you prescribed dose is. I have always been told not exceeds x2 a day for a long time......however I have.....when the beast calls I fight back. Great care should be taken with ALL triptans because of the possibility of cardiac problems and with long term usage Triptans build up in the melanin, tissues in the eye.

Good luck and PFDAN's
Mark
