Good morning all! I was just wondering if anyone has tried the beta blocker Atenolol? My Mom was put on it for her blood pressure and the doctor said it also helps migraines? My cousin is taking it and hasn't had a migraine since.Mom said it's generic and very cheap also. Thank you. Alice in Seattle

For Cluster H its primary benefit is low cost! Sorry, doesn't have much of a track record with Cluster.

I haven't tried it for clusters, and haven't heard much good about it on the boards. It is being prescribed: Quote: Numerous other medications have been used for prophylaxis: valproate, capsaicin, beta-blockers. Unfortunately, double-blind studies are often lacking and are difficult to realize due to spontaneous variable remission of episodic CH Rev Med Interne. 2001 Feb;22(2):151-162. Hi Alice, Wow, how ironic... I called my pharmacy today asking what the difference is between Atenolol and Verapamil. I have been on Atenolol for years (originally prescribed for migraines). I hate to tell you this, but I'm in my third month of daily CH and the Atenolol isn't working. The pharmacist said that with cluster headaches what works for one may not work for another OR the meds may work for a while and then not. Carolann

Hello and soory to hear the Atenolol isn't working. I still taking Imitrex, only thing that seems to work with both migraine and cluster. I also use ice bags a lot, just lay it on the area that is throbbing, seems to feel a little better. I get the bad clusters in the winter here, usually November through the new year. Hope you will find something that works for you. Take care, Alice

Carolann, you shouldn't trust a pharmacist too much when it comes to preferred treatments for clusters. It's true, "what works for one may not work for another", but that holds mainly for the more exotic treatments of CH. But when it comes to preventatives, the first choice are calcium channel blockers (Verapamil). At least that is what Prof. Dr. Peter Goadsby says. And since he is one of the worlds foremost experts on CH, I trust him more than any old pharmacist. (BTW, Goadsby recommends the regular release Verapamil, not the fancy sorts that bring more money to the pharmacists cash box.) Beta blockers (like Atenolol) have a fairly good record as preventative for meegraines, but the success stories for CH are rare and far between. The gurus from the DMKG (German Headache Society) even list beta blockers among the ineffective or obsolete treatments for CH (together with OTC analgesics, Carbamazepine, MAO-inhibitors, histamine antagonists, biofeedback, acupuncture, psychotherapy and similar hanky-panky.) So, give your stomach a holiday from beta blockers (and trade it in for the constipation with Verapamil ). PFNADs Ueli

I just need to comment about the "any old pharmacist" comment in the previous post... My father was a pharmacist his whole life. He often saved people a lot of trouble by noticing medications the patient was taking that did not work well together. Who knows - he could have even saved a life or two. Pharmacists are very knowledgeable about medications, and a good one knows what seems to work for his customers and which ones don't. I trust my pharmacist when I need to know about side effects. If I have a medication concern, he is generally the first one I will go to for an opinion before calling my doctor's office then waiting all day for a return call. I know the doctor's advice is what we need to go by. But don't blow off your pharmacist. If he/she is a good one, they can be of immense help. Thanks for letting me vent about that... Barb

Sorry - one more thing. The pharmacist generally does not have a huge "cash box". Drug companies, yes. But the average owner-pharmacist makes a decent living, and that's all.
