Gallbladder and Indocin link?

Its been a bad year.  First kidney stone surgery from Topamax.  Now upcoming gallbladder surgery.

My gallbladder symptoms started when I had a bad 'reaction' to Indocin last August.  After taking 3 pills (which stopped my headaches in their tracks), my stomach area felt on fire.  I stopped immediately and began taking proton pump inhibitors, thinking it was a stomach ulcer.  It never got better.

I had a HIDA scan finally a couple weeks ago, and my galbladder is working at 11% (I think 35% is marginally acceptable).

Anyone else have their gallbladder beat up by Indocin?

Indomethacin does reduce the ability of the gall bladder to contract.  Hard to say if the Indocin was "the cause" or if the gallbladder problem was waiting to happen - there could have been a silent loss of function over years, and the med tipped it from marginal function down to 11% and pain.

I just had my gallbladder out last week.  It is a very easy procedure.  4 tiny cuts and your done.  I had to be at hospital at 6:45am.  My surgery started at 8:40.  I was done at the latest by 10:30.  I was there in recovery until 1:30.  Then discharged and sent home on pain meds for a couple of days.  Good luck on your upcomming surgery!

Thanks floridian - you're probably right.

Thanks for the optimism Karla - I'm hoping no complications.  Fingers crossed.

I take 300mg Indocin per day but each time with something to eat.

Still got a good gallbladder and good stomach but am lactose intolerant.

good luck with the surgery
