Hello, My husband suffers from episodic CH and it's that time of year again. We are looking for alternative treatments for his CH. Has anyone tried "Sinus buster"(capsaicin).I've beeen reading about Shrooms and that sounds promissing. We dabbled in Shrooms recreationally and have no problem trying them again. If anyone has tried "sinus Buster" please let us know how well or if at all that it works. Thanks, Chadsgirl

It's a farce from what I know and have read... But if he wants to squirt pepper spray up the nose... You MUST let us know how he likes it! As a matter of fact, please, videotape it for us! When you say "alternative", what does that mean? Alternative's would be pretty much anything he hasn't tried yet... So what has he tried? I'd suggest seeing a GOOD neuro that specializes in clusters and get started on preventative meds, and get some imitrex for the really bad ones. Otherwise, there's a huge chance that O2 will work to prevent. Melatonin at night is a life saver for some of us.... And you can read up on the other "alternative" at www.clusterbusters.com We applaud you for seeking help for your husband... Good wifey.

Actually capsaisin is a legitimate treatment: http://www.clusterheadaches.org/library/medications/capsaicin.htm There was an actual study done last year (promoted on this and the OUCH site). I think it had so-so results. That ugly old fart, Paco, used to put tobasco under his tongue to abort attacks. In fact, at the Atlanta OUCH convention he passed out little 1/8 oz bottles of tobasco.

The guy that sells sinus buster is a marketing machine - his endless stream of press releases are all the same, but they all trigger a Google news alert in my mailbox. Hot pepper and ginger both have pungent compounds that block substance P and can reduce pain. I've tried putting capsaizin cream up the nose with a Q-tip ... it burns like hell, causes the eye on that side to water ... kinda reminds me of a cluster headache. With repeated dosing, the painful effects of capsaicin diminish - the body develops a tolerance as the substance P is depleted and/or the receptors for SP are down regulated. Short term, you could try hot sauce, or cayenne in capsule form. I did that for a while. Strangely, some times it would lead to a burning feeling in the stomach, but usually not, and I could never predict it. When using heavy doses for the long term, there are some concerns about the effects of lots of cayenne/capsaicin on the liver and kidneys. Ginger seems safer - I eat an Indonesian candy called Ting Ting Jahe, which I get at the local Asian foods store. There is also a Philippine beverage powder called Salabat that is ginger and sugar with a little lemon. Or you can just make tea from fresh or dried ginger. If you don't feel the burn, you may not be getting enough to help. And like cayenne, it takes regular use over time to get an effect. Magnesium is worth trying. Not a magic bullet, but it provides some pain reduction in about 40% of people tested. I have found melatonin and 5htp are good for me. I am episodic, get hit in July/August. I notice my sleep gets weird before the beast visits, and try to normalize my sleep with a 5htp capsule at mid-day, and melatonin at night. Once the beast arrives, you may need more melatonin. You may also want to wait on the 5htp till after the shrooms if you decide on that route - 5htp has been reported to blunt the effects of hallucinogens, and could cause serotonin syndrome when mixed with other drugs that affect the serotonin system. Tea soaks up nitric oxide (which is involved in cluster pain), while turmeric reduces N.O. production.

I'm sorry, I neglected to say that my husband has tried Sansert, Prednisone, Imitrex, and enough Morphine to stop his heart but not the headache. O2 has been our saving grace! We are currently uninsured and paying out of pocket for the O2 wich he drags with him whever he goes. So what I mean by "alternative" is something we don't need a perscription for. His cycle is just beginning and I want to break it before it is in full swing. It's hard to see him in so much pain and there's nothing I can do for him except keep the kids quiet. Chadsgirl

I have suffered CH for a long, long, time. I should have known better but I fell for this stuff at a time in my current cycle when I was willing to do just about anything to stop pain. Clearly it didn't work for the attacks. And ... when I got a head cold it didn't do anything to help with that either. I am tempted to try it on a steak but I am not into huffing beef (or huffing anything for that matter). My advise, if money is tight, is to look for something else to try. I haven't heard of anybody with CH having success with this stuff and I proved it. Bill
