Good morning fellow sufferers, After 4 years of peace the devil has once again got hold of me in my secret hiding place. It wasn't so bad this time and I held out for as long as I could without meds. Only ice packs. And then - surprise!!! One no. 6 followed by 2 no. 3 - 4's per night. Of course the first phone call the next morning was to the neurologist who treated me the last time. You guys won't believe this - he came up with a new treatment!!! I was immediately admitted to hospital (even without a consultation at the rooms - he is VERY VERY concerned about this CH problem - he believes that it is the worse thing that can happen to any living human being!!) That same night he injected some "coctail" into the back of my skull to enter the brain stem. And guess what???? Only 1 no. 1 ch for 15 minutes since. Otherwise it completely stopped. I have no idea what "cocktail" it was, but if any of you are interested, I will contact him when he is back from leave and find out what it was. My life is back to normal and I will forever be in this doctor's debt. Sunshine South African greetings. Linda.Hyman@sita.co.za

Of course I also want to know!!!!! Lol!!! He finised with me at 01h15 in the morning and left straight away for home and went on leave the next day. I had no time to ask him what it was. He is a funny guy, last time round (4 years ago) when he treated me with a different method he pitches in hospital wards at 3 - 4am to check on his patients. Now that's a bargain!!! cause that's when the ........ beast is at it's best. You are awake and completely alert during the procedure. Laying on your arms with your head bend forwards, he injects onto the skull bone on both sides about 8cm from the spine. Funny enough, it is not painfull at all. For the first week after the infiltration (as the doc calls it) your skull feels a bit like bruised and sore if you touch it but no pain or discomfort. I promise to contact him as soon as he is back as he also wants a report back. Will keep you updated. In the meantime - keep talking to me if you need support. You are more than welcome to mail me at Linda.Hyman@sita.co.za

Sounds like a nerve block. They can help - usually for a few weeks, but it might be enough to break a cycle. Sometimes the injection is an anesthetic, other times a steroid. See: http://www.spineuniverse.com/displayarticle.php/article1518.html Quote:Cephalalgia. 2002 Sep;22(7):520-2. * Cephalalgia. 2003 May;23(4):323; author reply 323. Greater occipital nerve blockade for cluster headache. Peres MF, Stiles MA, Siow HC, Rozen TD, Young WB, Silberstein SD. Jefferson Headache Center, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Cluster headache is perhaps the most painful of the primary headache disorders. Its treatment includes acute, transitional, and preventive therapy. Despite the availability of many treatments, cluster headache patients can still be difficult to treat. We treated 14 cluster headache patients with greater occipital nerve block as transitional therapy (treatment initiated at the same time as preventive therapy). The mean number of headache-free days was 13.1 + 23.6. Four patients (28.5%) had a good response, five (35.7%) a moderate, and five (35.7%) no response. The greater occipital nerve block was well tolerated with no adverse events. Headache intensity, frequency and duration were significantly decreased comparing the week before with the week after the nerve block (P < 0.003, P = 0.003, P < 0.005, respectively). Greater occipital nerve blockade is a therapeutic option for the transitional treatment of cluster headache. |

Hi Linda!! It's nice to see you posting again and I'm SO glad you've finally found pain freedom. I remember back in those early days of ch.com, you were just going through hell. I sure was happy to read that you got a nice long remission. We definitely would be interested to hear the contents of your injection and hope that it continues to keep you at peace. Cheers to you, my South Africa friend.

I had an occipital nerve block and what you are describing sounds exactly the same. The only bad thing....it only lasts awhile! Hopefully though you either had something else we can all learn about OR your nerve block lasts you many many many months. let us know renee

Sounds like an Occipital nerve block to me to. I've had 5 of them. The first one is the only one that really helped ... for 17 days. The average of PF time (if successful) is 13 days. Goodluck Unsolved

Now, this does sound very strange. Has D.J. heard of this? Is there any TOP BRASS here that has heard of this? He did'nt dance around you with a purple and green feather mask on his face or anything like that afterward did he?... Just curious, that's all, ...Mark..
