O2 Help
« on: Mar 13th, 2004, 7:11pm »

I have used o2 both in the hospital and at home with non-breather 8 to 15 litres\minute and neither worked.  I keep trying and it still has not worked for me.  I do try for 15 min and longer. What the hell am I doing wrong.  Help!  I've spent the majority of the last 2 months admitted to two hospitals due to Chronic CH and Chronic Migraines.

If you're making sure that the bag is filling each time you breathe out, and you're pulling in practically pure O2 each time you breathe in, you're doing it right. Maybe you're going chronic? O2 alone has never done a lot for me - I have to start sucking on the tank along with taking some kind of triptan (Maxalt, Amerge, etc.).

o2 does not abort for me.... just keeps it from getting worse.  Useful for holding the line until a tablet takes effect.

I suck from the hose... masks just piss me off when being hit.

If I am getting an HA, suck o2 for 15 min, then stop... bang.... the HA hits.

So triptans are not aborting for you?

Connie,
Even though oxygen helps alot of ppl, it's not effective for all. It doesn't work for me either (i've tried it lots).

You're welcome, Connie. The way it was explained to me, the idea is to saturate your bloodstream with oxygen. Doing so sends signals to the blood vessels that they don't have to supply as much blood because the stuff they are supplying is rich in O2, therefore they aren't required to open up as wide. The result is that all your blood vessels constrict a little.

Some people can abort a CH with just O2. I can't, but I think it definitely helps bring it to a close sooner.

I don't know - makes sense to me.

Thanks to all,

I'm sorry that it took me so long to reply.  I was busy trying the o2 and anything else last night and most of the morning.  This has got to end. PERIOD.  I will find a way...

Connie,
when I do the 02 trick, I take it straight from the hose, that works a lot better for me.  I also alternate between Zomig (5mg) and Maxalt MLT which usually aborts the HA and use the 02 for the rebounds when they occur.  Good Luck and hang in there.  Cry

Connie - Have you tried the inpatient DHE-45 treatment yet? It gave me 3 days of wonderful relief. 36 hours after I got out the beast came back with a vengeance for about a week, but then it was gone for 6 months. Might be worth a try if you've got a neuro that'll order it and an insurance company that'll pay for it.

Yes I am on DHE IM, Topomax, Thorazine pill form, Toradol IM, Zyprexia, Compazine IM, Klonapin for stress and 02, which I still can't get to work.  I'm Chronic and I can't tell you when the last day was that I did not fight with a LVL 7 to 10 Migraine or 7 to 10 CH.  It is quite a battle guy's.  I tried Verapamil, Prendisone, Depakote, Neurontin and none of those worked.  I'm gonna give dopomax a go for a while.  My Neuro is titrating that slowly so, we will see...  Thank you for all of your support.  Connie

Hey connie..I just started O2 on Friday  for the first time in 25 years almost..Ive found a fair amount of relief. Last nite I had 2......first one...wore the cannula for about 15 min.....completely went away...then about an hour later the second one hit...hit the teeth and everything...but not too severe....at that point I said f#*&k it...and wore the cannula all night .....fell asleep...woke up feelin good....so  if I get one tonight...which I will...I will put it on and keep it on this time.  I have a concentrator...not a tank....u?
