hypothermia against clusters

Alright, this sounds a bit odd, but when a HA comes, we've all done odd things, right? Well, I'm a graduate student in physiology and feel I have a fair handle on most bodily systems so I've tried something during three clusters that I figured may work. When the pain got to the point where I started pacing (kip 7 or 8), I laid in the bath tub and turned the water as cold as it would get and let it begin to fill. I keep my legs out because I'm too tall to have both my legs and head submerged, and once I get my breathing under control, the pain is overshadowed by the shivering and twitching. Anyway, usually five minutes in the frigid water followed by a warm shower seems to break recent HA's for me. Since cheap, alternative solutions, seem to be needed by some people, I thought I'd share. I have a few ideas on why it may work, but I'd prefer feedback before conjecture. (I'm looking forward to my first O2 tank on Friday)

Cold is a common method used by cluster sufferers. Ice packs on the face/eye/temple/neck. A lot of us go outside in the middle of the winter and pace barefoot on the cement patio. Weather permitting, jumping into cool/cold water of the swimming pool is not unheard of. Try hanging your head out the car window in the middle of winter (while your spouse/partner drives) and breathing in the ice cold air. Yep, cold is good. On the other hand, many use heat in much the same way to get relief. Glad you've found a way to get some relief.
