I'm new to this site (although get episodes of cluster headaches for 3 months every 2 to 3 years).

As well as getting the attacks, I notice during the bouts I always have a sore neck and head.Particularly at the base of my head near the neck on the side I get the attacks. It's like I've been kicked in the head.

Does anyone else have this and if so does anyone know why this is/what causes it?

Hey, I just talked with my neuro about this issue as I had more of this time episode than in the past.  He says that there are several things that can cause this--from just being so tense while you are having the attacks and even from dreading the next attack....to the actual blood vessels being sore from the attacks (I usually feel this more over my eye and my carotid)...and actual spinal/neck issues that are compounded by the attacks.  I found that gently massaging my neck every 30 minutes and using cool compresses helped.

Henzey, I agree except with me that neck soreness is always on the cluster side so it is more specific to CH than tenseness, at least with me.  Hot showers help me more than ice packs with that tightness but whatever works best for you....

No, it's not a headache--it's a Stage Ten Primary Chronic Periodic Idiopathic Trigeminovascular Cephalalgic Crisis.

Hi, I'm new here too. But I do have a sore neck as well before an attack. My right eye swells and tears up.
Lately I've gotten worse. I get them daily usually between 11:00 pm and 3:00 am.

Hello Tabbs I'm also new. My head stays sore all during a cycle just about.  I just always thought it was due to how intense the pain can be. Something like a bruise after you have been hurt. Maybe my brain is bruised!! At times it feels like  it!

I also get a sore neck on the same side as the attack...normally the right side.  I only get it during an attack.  I never noticed it prior to using imitrex as an abortive.  Imitrex kills the HA in about 10 or so minutes for me, but it doesn't touch the neck soreness.  I'm guessing that the soreness was always there during attacks, but I didn't notice it because it is nothing compared to an attack.

More often than not, I am so excited about killing the HA that I could give a crap about my neck being sore.

Well I can certainly relate to what Katlee said

"My head stays sore all during a cycle just about.  I just always thought it was due to how intense the pain can be. Something like a bruise after you have been hurt. Maybe my brain is bruised!! At times it feels like  it! "

I get a feeling the head/neck gets sore because it's the place where the receptor is having problems?Has anyone else thought this could be the answer?

As for massaging my neck, or touching my neck or the sore part of my head or even using ice packs, that just brings on an attack. So I leave it well alone!
But each of us are different as to what works for us.But it's great to have a site like this where we can all swap advice and experiences and maybe help eachother.

Tabbs,
Welcome. I get pain in the muscle that runs up the side of my neck. It seems to start just before the pain in my head. The pain in my head overrides anyother pain, so it is not very noticeable. Sometimes I can apply pressure to that muscle and can reduce the pain in my head. I'm guessing for me this is a nerve response. Hope this helps.

Can't remember a sore neck (but I'm old and entitled to senior moments) but the top of my head sure gets sore.
