Don't mix Triptans!!!

I know a lot of you on the meds section of this board do not go into the General Discussion side very often.
I want to make sure that EVERYONE sees catlind's thread entitled "Bad News" over in general discussion (can't figure out how to link it). Roxy had a VERY bad reation to mixing Imitrex & Zomig!
PLEASE DO NOT MIX YOUR TRIPTANS! It can be hazardous to your health.

Thanks Virgina, Yes Please everyone read the post that Catlind wrote. Roxy is in the hospital right now and it could all have been triggered from her mixing tripans. We are all learned more every day. And it sucks that we are the ones that have to educate our docs rather then the other way around. but we are still not docs. We need to be careful.

All of us have done a poor job of focusing on appropriate use and safety issues of the potent meds we talk about.
Too many people assume that any drug the FDA approves must be safe and/or the drive for relief leads to not attending to side effects and the effects of mixing various meds.

Here is at least a partial list of triptans borrowed from Teri Roberts:
sumatriptan (Imitrex®, Imigran®)
zolmitriptan (Zomig®)
naratriptan (Amerge®, Naramig®)
rizatriptan (Maxalt®) and rizatriptan orally dissolvable (Maxalt-MLT®)
zolmitriptan orally dissolvable (Zomig-ZMT®)
almotriptan (Axert®)
frovatriptan (Frova®)
eletriptan (Relpax®)

Supposedly this article is kept up to date.
Also, do NOT use triptans within 24 hours of using ergotamine-containing or ergot-like medications.

Possible contraindications for triptans

uncontrolled hypertension
family history or prescence of coronary artery disease or heart attacks
severe hepatic (liver) impairment
history of stroke
risk factors for coronary artery disease
uncontrolled diabetes
high cholesterol levels
smoking
obesity
hemiplegic or basilar migraine
surgical or physiological menopause
male over 40
If you have any of these risk factors or develop any of them, you need a cardiovascular evaluation. Your neuro might skip that so you might need to ask your GP or internist.
Also, pregnant women should discuss the use of triptans with their MDs.
