Does the starvation/sleep deprivation work?
« on: Nov 3rd, 2003, 3:04pm »

It feels like I'm about to begin a cycle, and I remember someone a while back mentioning that very little eating and sleeping could avert the pain of another cluster headache cycle.

Anyone agree/disagree?

I'm still pretty sure excessive sleep deprivation started the whole thing in the first place.

I just meant that you sleep something like 5 hours a night, and eat about 3/4s to 1/2 of what you usually eat.

I know, it sounds odd. But I'm fairly desperate.

I don't think I've slept more than 5 hours in a couple of years now....

I cut down on eating about 2 years ago...
(went from 200 to 140).  I'm more fit to fight, but...

on the whole, CH accelerated viciously during this period.

Starvation only works for Ethiopians. I have never heard of an Ethiopian with clusters.

Sleep depravation? I haven’t slept since April 31, 1993 and have had only two 4 month long cycles since then.

Just kidding.  Wink  It’s a damned if you do-damned if you don’t thing. Most people are afraid to go to sleep because that’s when the beast attacks. But if you don’t sleep and become overtired the beast attacks anyway..

Unless a food is a trigger for you I’d say eat all you want as often as you want, twice.

I think that it might be more of a "shock to your system" thing.

For instance, I usually sleep 7-8 hours a night. Dropping down to 5 and lowering my food intake would theoretically be somewhat of a "shock" to my system and hopefully...somehow...cancel out the CH cycle before it starts up in force.

But I'm probably stretching here.

Also, has anyone noticed that heat from an old, dusty pipe-in-the-wall heating system is a trigger?

Thanks for all of the comments, guys.

my view, in summary, is that an f'd up hypothalamus, or clock chip, only gets more broken by messing with whatever is left of it's native rhythms.

be careful.

I don't know what a old, dusty pipe-in-the-wall heating system is. It sounds like something that blows mold, mildew, dust, mites, fumes, small dirty children and volkswagens into your house. Many people have said allergies trigger their attacks. Could be the same for you.

I tried sleep deprivation during my cycle.  Didn't work.
I always had a visit from the beast around 2:30 am.  Got to where I was afraid to go to sleep.  Tried staying up past the time of the normal visit......he just came later!

For me, the lack of sleep seemed to make the pain more intense.  Not all folks are the same though.

Pf vibes coming your way.....

Trying to eat  healthy, exercise, and maintain a regular sleep schedule can help. Sleep deprivation will only hurt.

I'll say it again,

in my opinion sleeping fewer hours may very well be a SYMPTOM of the same something that causes clusters.

I have had this so called "sleep disorder" from when I was a kid. I didn't get clusters till I was well over 50.
