I have been taking prednisone for my CHs and have tapered off it after about a month on it. I have been feeling pretty lousy ever since. I have more general HAs now in addition to the CHs. I feel like I have a hangover all the time. I am wondering if I am experiencing withdrawal from the prednisone, but I stopped it completely a little over a week ago. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, how long do these HAs last?

Hi EB,
Blake just tapered off Prednisone. He was on it for almost 4 years and the taper took 6 months. The only symptom he mentioned was achy joints which we believe was probably there all along...but the prednisone had masked the joint pain. He had no "normal people headaches" as he calls them...

I am currently on a Prednisone taper...tomorrow is my last day. Have been on 10mg for 5 days now. Started on 60mg. I did have some problems. I never felt as though I had a hangover. But I did have what seemed to be an anxiety attack. But that was last Thursday. Guess maybe because I was well into the taper, or maybe I was anticipating a ha. Not sure. But went thru several hours of just overall nervousness, jumpiness, bitchiness and kinda like my heart was in my throat.
I think I'm just plain nutz !!!!!!!! 
However, as usual, my clusterbuddies came to my rescue. Sent an instant message to 1 and he jumped right in there to help. Called my "angel" clusterbud, Jackie, and she just was great. Stayed on the phone with me and talked till the anxiety passed.
Other than that, I have done great on the taper. I started the Prednisone on the 9th of Sept., and have been pf ever since, except for a couple of shadows. Guess we'll see, if it works for sure.

Hi EBR, I don't know if this will work for you but it seemed to help me. I went through the Pred withdrawl and was talking to a dietitian friend of mine who told me to take Viactive. The little chocolate potassiam(sic) chews. Chewing 2 a day seemed to help. I don't know how or why, but hey, a lil chocolate tidbit isn't such a bad thing. Oh yeah, the chocolate DID NOT trigger a cycle, so BONUS!

I have been on prednisone for approx. 6 years and was in the process of tapering off "again"...down to 2mg. per day. Today the dr. upped me back to 3mg as my CHs have been getting worse for about 2 months. I have been tapering off very slowly (1mg per every 2mo). As Jackie mentioned, I am suffering now from pretty severe joint aches as I did one time before when I tapered off. I hate the stuff and have gained 40 lbs. while on it. But, I'll go back up a mg. if it'll help the clusters. I've been living on entirely too many cafergots.
Good luck, and try your best to get off of it asap....that is if your CHs don't get worse.

I've bever heard of anyone going through withdrawls from taking Prednisone. It just made you feel better and now it's gone.

Hey UE....How are your doing????? I've been waiting to hear how you did. Did your surgery go well?
PS. You really should taper off of prednisone. I've been trying to get off of it for years. Doctor raised me back up to 3mg today from 2mg.
Anxious to hear how you did??

Zonie ~ At a dose of only 2 or 3 mg ... I'm not sure if you'd even have to taper off of that. It's doses like I was taking at 60 mg or more than can be really dangerous after awhile. I'm not sure that your immune system would be suppressed any at all at such a small dose. ???

Hey, UE....sorry that it took me so long to see your post, but I was on here tonite looking for any problems related to Cafergot. The prednisone that I have been on for a couple of years now has been more of a maintenance dose than anything. A couple of times before when I did come off of them I developed severe joint pain (just like someone posted on here earlier) and severe edema in both feet. My neuro at the time was a headache specialist and she said to try the 5 mg. per day as a maintenance dose. That amount doesn't help my CH at all, and a really bad side effect for me is that I have put on about 50 pounds while on it.
I get a referral to a new neuro tomorrow, so I'll throw all of this at him/her, along with a file folder of info from OUCH. Just food for thought for them....at least they'll know that they aren't dealing with some bimbo that knows nothing about clusters, huh? In my 13 years of CH, I have really been amazed at how little these neuros know about us and our problem. I have had more than 1 tell me that they wouldn't treat me because they didn't know enough about clusters. We have a wonderful Neurological Institute here in Phoenix (Barrow's) and the only headache specialist there left after she had treated me for about 2 years.
How are you feeling anyway? I've not really had an opportunity to check all of the threads tonite....just mainly checking on real life testamonials about Cafergot.
Wish me luck tomorrow. Who knows, it could be the beginning of a great new avenue to a pain free day or two. I could sure use a few.
Keep posting, cause I always enjoy your expertise and wit.....just the right combination. And I'll even add that I think you're really brave.....do you ever feel like a guina pig??

I have had the hangover you are speaking of after tapering a 9 day prescription of Prednisone. But no other side effects hat can be mentioned.
The first 3 days was 60 mg.
Second 3 days was 40 mg.
Last 3 days was 20 mg. That prescription brought the CH back and had a hangover feeling for 2 days till I went back to the Dr and he prescribed 60 mg daily for two weeks (i'm still in middle of the 2 weeks), then I am to taper to 40 mg for 5 days, 20 mg for 5 more days and finalize it with a half a tab daily (10 mg) for the last three days.
After all this amount of time, hopefully the 160 mg of daily Verapamil will have started to work and be CH free without any meds. Wishful thinking or realistic thought?

After stopping Prednisone...you will go through a withdrawal dependent on how long you've been on it. It's your body depleted of Cortisol & it should pass. If it continues...you may have to go through a longer weaning process.
