I Slept Throughout The Night
« on: Aug 31st, 2003, 9:18am »

Hi All,

I can't remember when I've had a full night's sleep when I'm in cycle.  I usually awaken 2-3 x's to searing pain in my left eye.

I took a poster's advice and used a mouth guard @ bedtime.   I slept throughout the night for the first time!   I did wake up to a tremendous shadow, though.

Was it a fluke?    I don't know.  I'll be trying it again tonight.

Thank You for suggesting this.

Sleep apnea could be a trigger for you, and a mouthguard might help you to breath through the night. Worth trying, keep us posted.

WoW!!

I got another good night's sleep wearing the mouth guard and I didn't wake up with a shadow! But, get THIS.  I didn't get 1 CH yesterday!! OMG!!  I feel soooo good....soooo normal!!

I went to numerous web sites yesterday and read about the sleep apnea/CH connection.  This just might be it for me, folks.

My regular run is NY-Tokyo. 14 1/2 hrs non-stop. During the flight we get a 5-hr break in the crew rest bunk.  I've been avoiding this flight like the plague for THAT reason.  I knew that I would wake up to a few CH's.  Can you imagine how that would have felt at 35,000 feet?!!  All I have to do now is buy another mouth guard for my suitcase and I'm set.  (Of course my fingers, toes and eyes are crossed as I'm typing this.)

To the poster who suggested the mouth guard, and to you, floridian:  Thank You, Thank You, Thank You... from the bottom of my heart.

For you, or anyone that has had any degree of success with a mouthguard, or think you may...
The following links should be checked out.
Dr. Boyd has spent years developing a very successful device (smaller than the usual mouthguard) that is the only FDA approved device of its kind, for treating headaches.
If you write to him and ask him, he will find a dentist in your area that is trained in making them, or he will send them a kit and training. Costs vary from dentist to dentist so check around if you decide to follow through.
This is a migraine/tension headache approved device and he has never suggested its use for clusters as he understands the difference. But...if it eliminates a trigger for your clusters....it might be worth a look.

Very very glad to hear this is working for you!

Please keep us posted...I've brought up the sleep apnea/CH connection to my doctor recently, and he didn't really buy into it.  So I've decided to have a sleep study done soon...I personally think there might be a connection, but what do I know...I'm still just a "newbie"...lol

I have a question - and will probably sound like a moron for asking it, but this is intriguing.

Is there a way to recognize if you have sleep apnea? The only person I know who KNOWS she has a problem is also an insomniac.

I sleep like the dead and have no problem getting to sleep - your sleep cycle isn't necessarily a symptom of apnea?

I'm really intrigued by that mouth guard. I think I'm going to try that tonight.

Thanks.

Oh - I slept on an icepack last night - frozen eyeball, but PF Night!!! Jam on!

I went to Dr. Boyd's web-site and that is the exact device my dentist made for me about 5 years ago.  It cost me $250.
I have been very bad and not wearing it, but right when this batch of HA started, I began wearing it again at night.  I still get the classic CH, but, at least the pain in my jaw is not as intense.

Another big tip if you're in CH mode and have jaw pain - only eat mushy food.  No raw carrots (cooked are fine) or anything like that.  You'll really notice the difference in the severity of your HA.

Hi All!!

I thought I'd give you an update:

The mouthguard really works for me!  No CH's or shadows anymore!!  Except.....

I was feeling sooooo good I thought I'd celebrate with a beer.    THAT was a definite NO-NO!!

I had a CH you wouldn't believe!  I'm stickin' with Crystal Light!!  It definitely wasn't worth it!!

from the bottle to the throttle ...

12 inches hours from the bottle to the throttle.  Looks like that's one pilot's maxim that doesn't apply.   I usually give up all alcohol when summer starts and I am susceptible to a cluster. I think about drinking again around thanksgiving time,  I don't really miss it anymore as I am far more worried about triggering a cluster.
