I am in agony. Headaches returned after 8 years without suffering. Doc prescribed prednisone, 40 mgs first three days, then taper off. Does anyone have any experience with this drug. Have I mentioned how #$%@*&% annoying and frustrating and PAINFUL these things are? Help, anyone...

If I am not mistaken that is the steroid med that is the typical rapid preventative for CH. Steroids I think are dosed in that typical tapered manner I do believe...I am certain there is probably a reason for that although I have no idea why. I have never taken it though. I sure do hope it does you well. He/she prescribe anything for the attacks? PFDANs! Prense

hello busker, try doing a search on predisone on this site and you'll find lots of posts about it. I have taken it myself, only at twice the dose you're taking, and it gave me a couple pain free days. I tapered off of it as soon as my neuro put me on a preventative. (Depakote) I also take imitrex injections or nasal sprays for abortives. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. I kind of hoped he would give me something for more immediate relief, but this is the course he recommended. I see a neuro in a couple weeks, though hoping cluster period over by then. Anyway, thanks for your input.

The Prednisone by itself never worked. It was always effective if taken with Sansert, or Depakote, or Verapamil, or Bellaspas, or all of the above!

here at the guinie pig farm we love our chemicals. Some pigs are just plain luckier than others. The owner has tattooed some of us as Placebo Pigs. Those poor bastards never git anything but sugar water and therefore think that nothin works fer them. MY TWO PRED STORIES BY DENNIS O"CONNOR or how i spent my summer vacation It was a dark and stormy night. I had been almost painfree for 2 years on Verapamil. I banged my elbow and parenthesis (pins and needles) started coming and going in my arm and hand. The doc put me on a one week Pred taper like yer on....it didn't do diddle squat fer the arm...(insert picture of clock with hands spinning wildly) ...months pass. Finally I end up at a neuro's office who says "Well son ya just didn't get enough Pred fer long enough. The yahoo puts me on a 3 week 60mg taper. My Cluster Fucking Headaches return with a vengance! The worst of my life....and I'm still on the VERAPAMIL too! Having read this board fer years and the countless testimonies of people for whom a Pred taper has worked "the miracle"...I was/am pissed. "Pred is supposed to break a cycle ...not cause one" says I gruffily. I ended the taper yesterday...we shall see. Here's hoping yer not a Placebo Pig! Walk in the sunshine den

Hello Busker, I myself am a chronic sufferer and just got through with a 20mg taper on the 30th, mine started with 4 a day for the first four days and then tapered down from there. It worked pretty good while I was on it but the CH's came back on the 1st. The 1st time of no CH's for two weeks, and that hasn't happend for over two years. There were side effects of feeling run down, having no energy and having a metallic taste in my mouth, I saw my regular doctor and was told that was normal and that cranberry tablets or drinking lots of cranberry juice. They also have me on verapamil 240 twice a day and Topamax at night. Good Luck Let us know how it works out

I guess everyone gets different results from similar treatments. I got almost immediate relief from the Prednisone taper (60mg x 4 days, 40mg x 3 days, 20mg x 3 days). I was jittery and restless the entire time, but there was no pain. I could sleep all night. The day I stopped the steroids the pain returned as soon as it left. I can't help but think that the Prednisone is very hard on your system. I'm not saying it wasn't worth 10 days of pain-free time, but my doctor won't prescribe this for me more than once a year. Verapamil SR 180 once a day works well for me for preventing attacks. Most people take this along with the Prednisone, and most seem to need higher doses than I need so they get a positive effect. Good luck.

Hi there This is my coctail Verapamil Retard 120mgX5-7/daily during cycle 3 weeks after last hit tapering down with 1 verap every 3/4 days until you are on 1 a day.1 a day for another 2 weeks you can decide to quit the verap or take 1 a day.Oxygene alone at 10ltm for 15 minutes or combined with imitrex-shots does miracles. The shots should start working in 6-9minutes.a few seconds after that you are almost painfree Prednisolone in high doze for 10 days 80mg then over a 3 weeks periode step down like 70-60-50-40-30-20-10-5mg every 3/4 day This work fine for me The very best from Svenn
