has anyone tried 5-HTP?

last year my boyfriends cycle started, and since i couldn't sleep(self explanatory). I stayed on the computer non stop to try to find out what causes CH. I found that people with CH's have low seritonin in their hypotholamus(may be spelled wrong). 5-HTP is something that your brain already has that turns into seritonin. When i was in the herbal store i noticed that they sell 5-htp in a bottle. The herbalist there told me that it is derived from a plant, and that it came out in the 60's, around the same time that prozac started to get popular. (5-HTP can also be taken for depression.) Unfourtunatly there was a tainted batch, and it was pulled from the market. (imagine that) well it is available again, but i would use a name brand that is trustworthy. About 2 weeks after he started taking it his cycle stopped. He took 3 capsules 3x's a day. He is now my ex, but his CH's just started again last week. I made sure he started with the 5-HTP again, and hopefully his cycle will be over in another week. My fingers are crossed that when he started taking it last year that it really worked and that it just was'nt the end of his cycle anyway. On a different note, when his imitrex didn't work and i had to take him to the emergency room, I would tell them to give him oxegen opened all the way, that would get rid of his CH almost immediatly.

I have tried 5htp and believes that it helps me. My summer cycle has been ramping up, and 5htp has restored my sleep to normal and (so far) has held the beast at bay. In previous summers, it has broken the cycle. The contaminated stuff that was banned was the amino acid tryptophan - 5htp is a form of tryptophan but is not identical - it has similar properties, but is closer to serotonin than is tryptophan. Use the search function on this site to find other posts. Good luck for you and your friend.
