Hi I´m Miguel ,new to the list and it has been a relief to see you in the net,so I´m not alone.I have been suffering ch for ten year now and believed or not it was not a problem for my untill recently. At the start it was the tipical sporadic crisis ,I was very confused cos I did not know what the hell it was, went to the doctor and told me I had a migrain and to take cafergot. Since then not a problem, every time it struck I poped two cafergots and in les than two minutes everything was back to normal ,so I carry on as normal untill I have to take two cafe daily and I started to worried. About two weeks ago I went to the neurologist and told me that I  was having a rebound efect with cafergot and that it caused me a cronic ch. So he prescrived me topamax as a preventive and zomig for the crisis. Well it may be to early to say anything about the topamax ,but the zomig is not working at all and instead of the daily crisis I used to have now I have three wich won´t go away, morning  afternoon and evening ,I´m on a sick leave from my job and don´t  dare to  go out  but the few moments in between crisis. please should anyone have any experience with cafergot and its effects in the long term please tell me, becouse i´m thinking about going back to it, I´m very confuse. Any ideas will most wellcome becouse I won´t see my doctor but in two weeks. Do not have to tell you about the pain because you allready now, excuse my english and thanks in advance.      Miguel

Hi Miguel.  Have you ever tried verapamil (calan) as a preventative?  It works great for several people here and has less side effects than some of the other stuff.  Also maybe you should try oxygen as an abortive, again it works well for many of us here.  Here is some info about how to use it properly:

oxygen and imitrix are the biggest helpers I am aware of and the most popular also.  They abort the ha.  Verapamil or lithium or a combo of the two drugs offer the best chance at protection to prevent the ch from appearing.  Topamax can mess with your short term memory and tern your mind to mush.  Good luck trying it.  If it doesn't work try the verapmil and lithum.

None of the pill forms of imitrex (imitrex, zomig, amerge, etc) touch my clusters.

I have to have the injections.  Try to get your Dr. to prescribe those or at least the nasal spray (it works somewhat better than the pills).
