"Be Koool" and crap

Here's a couple of non-drug methods I find effective for me. I carry around a pack of "Be Koool" with me everywhere. When I feel the onset of an attack, I pull one strip out and put it on my neck. Works better for me than ice; ice is too cold or something. Not to mention the convenience of quick access. I've found "Be Koool" brand to be most effective and best for recycling; this can be used over and over and over as long as you don't leave it out too long and put it back in the bag with the plastic back on the cooling surface. For very weak attacks or shadows, I've found Be Koool alone can even abort an attack, although I normaly take it with Excedrin, and for a bona-fide attack, always Imitrex. Be Koool has a great effect in making sure Imitrex kicks in. For maximum effect, I use 2 strips: one on neck and one on side of head/temple/ear area. But when I don't want to make it so obvious, the neck alone is much better than nothing. The other strange non-drug method, which might not technically qualify under "medications, treatments, therapies", is going to the bathroom and taking a dump, right after an attack is imminent or has started. I've only been able to confirm this effect during my current cycle, but it seems to help. Obviously, crapping alone does not abort a cycle. But compared to situations where I haven't been able to go (driving, in seminar, or in courtroom), the bathroom factor is a definite plus. This very well could be related to the fact that I take Verapamil (540 mg/day), with its constipating tendencies, not that constipation is a problem for me esp. after the 1st week on Verapamil. These may or may not work for you, but it's always worth a try, right? After all, crapping is free!

Curtis, I'm serious here, man. Just because you don't know what "Be Koool" is doesn't mean it's bogus. I'm just trying to help by sharing what works for me. As for "Be Koool", it's a cooling patch sold over-the-counter, typically near all the analgesics. There are Excedrin and other brands that specifically try to market toward headache sufferers. In my experience, "Be Koool" works best. Why don't you chill out and try it before judging so harshly?

Bo cool ijun. Curtis was only trying a play on words....notice the smiley face. I've seen the Be Kool packs. There are others on the market but I don't know if they're any good. When I need a cold pack I just fill a zip-lock full of ice cubes. Some people use frozen veggies, but that wouldn't be good if you're away from home.

Woops, you're right. Sorry, missed the smiley. You know we all become more short-tempered than usual... Real ice was too much for me, and I almost gave up on the cooling thing until I came across Be Koool. I think it's much better than other similar products, since it seems to retain the cooling ability for much, much longer duration. Also, this stuff is great for kids' bumps, bruises, and burns when they don't like ice; they can tolerate the Be Koool much better.

Thank you, Bob. IjunG4, Bob is right, I wasn't trying to imply your treatment is bogus, in fact, at first glance, it seems to have merit for the following reasons: 1. More than a few people have proclaimed relief from applying cold to certain areas. 2. Studies have shown that vasoactive intestinal peptide levels are raised during an attack and are normalized upon administration of sumatriptan (imitrex) or spontaneous remission of the attack. I have no idea if moving the bowels affects those VIP levels in a way that helps the CH, but the notion certainly has merit and warrents investigation. My question was legitimate about "Be Kool". I have never heard of it. but from your description, it seems like it would be a good thing to have if you travel. Totally with you on the short-tempered bit. No hard feelings, brother. Curtis, Thanks for your forgiveness and for the interesting facts on VIP. I'm glad it wasn't just my imagination, that there might be actual scientific basis for this! Jun btw--here is a link for Be Koool info. Shows what the packaging looks like. http://headaches.about.com/cs/management/gr/be-koool.htm

BobP, not to put you on the spot or on the "pot" so to speak. But I seem to recall similar personal anecdotal evidence related to this topic from your perspective in the archives??   Maria
