imitrex question

I'm new here and have been reading alot of the old and new post and see that imitrex, verapamil and oxygen work for alot of you. Did anyone have problems with their first imitrex injection? I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest! Did anyone else experience this and should i try again?

Also, my blood pressure naturally runs low and md gave me verapamil 240mg the first time i tried it and it didn't help. Is this dose to low to have an effect? (took it for 1 month).

Right now im using fioricet with excedrin and that helps. but am worried about addiction and rebound headaches. I know this doesnt normally work for alot of you and hasent helped in the past but for some reason its helping this time. Thanks in advance for any help. krista

Hi Krista

I think many experience the feeling in the chest you mention. Imitrex definitely shrinks the blood vessels in the heart a bit making it pump a bit harder. Also for many the thought of self-injecting for the 1st time gets the adrenaline going too I think.

I remember the 1st time I took it was very wierd and was unsure of using it again. I have been using it for about 7 years during cycles and I would not hesitate now.

The question I ask is - did it stop the CH pain inside about 10 minutes? If it did and you obviously survived the 1st shot then try it again. It will not seem so bad next time now you know what to expect. Just relax and let the inj work.

klp i agree with jmorgan52 the first time is the hardest after that it comes easy because you know it will stop the pain. And don't forget to use the imitrex tip i know it might sound hard but its easy and will make your shots last a lot long and you will need those extra shots because the insurance companys are not going to give you enough each month

I stock pile my Imitrex injections due to insurance regs.
I found that if I use the oldest experation dates first up to a year out of date, I won't toss them out because of the cost.
They have less side effects and the same reaction time to get rid of the beast.
I checked with my MD. he said the worst thing that can happen with expired shots is they just won't work and can't hurt you.

Hi, I just took the injection for the first time too.  My heart also raced and I got a really bothersome, dull tension on the back of my neck.  I didn't know if this was normal or not so I checked here and found this post.

I've been taking the nasal spray form of Imitrex for a long time, so I'm surprised my body reacted this much to the injection.  It only took seconds for the CH to go away!  (I was "prepped" taking Excedrin and Be Koool on my neck).  With nasal spray, it's anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, or not working at all.   I'm surprised it worked this good, since I only had the needle in for a second, because the surprise factor made me involuntarily take the needle out right away, and I could even see that there was some wasted solution on the tip.

I'm going to have to check out the "Imitrex tip"; this regular dosage seems like it's overkill, not to mention the insurance factor...

Here's a question, as long as we're on the topic:  has anyone gone from injections back to nasal spray and found the spray doesn't work as much as it used to?  I'd hate for the nasal spray to become obsolete, since the injection isn't always practical (such as during business meetings...) where spray can still be used stealthily.

ijunG4 i use the imitrex injection all the time a lot better than the nasal spray for me.If you start doing the injections make sure use the imitrex tip because the insurance company are not going to give you a enough.
You can also get imitrex in 6 mgs vials and load your own needles with 2-3 mgs I use both. When you go to the doctors ask him or her for sample imitrex injections same thing you get from the RX and its free

I've used Imitrex auto injectors, Nasal Spray and pills. After you use the injection the spray still works fine. You should blow your nose well before you use the spray to increase your chances of absorbing the dose. I rarly try to use the spray when both my nostrils are blocked. The injection does seem to be a large dose that enters your system very quickly and its not suprising you will have that kinda side effect the first couple of times. Someone once gave me a great tip for the imetrix pill: Disolve one in a glass of warm water and drink it just before bed if you are expecting the beast to pounce deuring the night. This usually gave me a good night sleep. Also if you are taking the pill, drink a STRONG cup of coffee as well as this will speed up the time your body takes to absorb it. I got relief in +-30 min from the pill, but when taken along with strong coffee, I reduced it to 20 to 25 min. Lastly its not recomended that you take more then 2 doses of imetrix a day!

There's no one on this planet that has used more Imitrex than me.  Cry I've used thousands of injections at the full dose of 6mg. I've also used up to 8 injections in a 20 hour period. It's my only relief! For those of you who feel chest pressure, burning or a flushing sensation...it's just your heart BEING SQUEEZED ! Maybe you should follow some of the other peoples' advice and only use 2 - 4 mg. You can take apart the stat dose refills, if you have trouble getting the vials,  and push a little out (but it is a waste of valueable medice) Give it a try and see if the side effects are less bothersome.
