Oxygen tablets

Ok, my co-worker has cluster headaches and the docs put him on verapamil, depakote and imitrex - but it's messed him up bad.  He can't walk straight, he's had incidents where he passed out, and serious nausea.

So now he's talking about dropping the drugs altogether and taking oxygen tablets as a preventive.  I've never heard of oxygen tablets and I'm deeply worried that he's bought something over the web that could hurt him.

Any information would be helpful.

Oxygen tablets will do nothing to abort or prevent cluster attacks.

The idea is to get O2 into the bloodstream. To get there, the O2 must be a gas, and must go through the lungs. O2 tablets will release O2 gas, but there's no way to get the O2 into your blood through the gastrointestinal tract.

And some say, and there's a study that seems to back this up, that it's not the oxygen itself that aborts a cluster attack, it's the inhalation of cold gas that does the trick. Ordinary air, if it's chilled, will do just as well as O2.  But a lot of folks around here disagree with that....

...I'm sure that Ueli will respond to this scam (and has in the past, I believe) .......

...My *spin* on this is that the body absorbs oxygen thru the LUNGS and only the lungs.... that's why o2 treatment is so effective for CH..... i seriously doubt that these pills add any o2 to the body....

...and o2 is an ABORTIVE, not a preventive.... search the archives and try this link:

Ignorants, Oxygen Tablets are absolutely useful - that what's  good for fishes and worms can't be useless for CHeads !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OXYGEN TABLETS

Keep Live Bait Lively!

Oxygen tablets replenish oxygen supply to keep live bait livelier. No mess. No fuss. No formulas to figure. Simply drop open side up into a bucket filled with fresh or salthingyer. In a few seconds the tablets will start bubbling, replenishing the oxygen supply. Depending on conditions, use one Intruder Oxygen Tablet for every five hours for 36 one-inch minnows.

* Ideal for minnows, leeches, shrimp
* Used by fishermen since 1940
* Use oxygen tabs in any type of bait bucket—plastic, metal or molded foam
* Keep from one season to the next
* Sealed tightly with beeswax. Simply loosen with a lighted match or can opener

Got to thinking about oxygen tablets. Are they only good for shipping fish or are there other good uses for them? What are they and how do they work?

SHRIMP-BUDDIES Oxygen And Water Conditioning Tablets For Use In Bait Buckets With Live Shrimp

A New Way To Help Keep Bait Shrimp Alive!

* Adds Oxygen To Water For Hours.
* Removes Ammonia.
* Conditions Water.
* Reduces Fungus And Bacteria.
* Lowers Shrimp Loss.

SHRIMP-BUDDIESä Are Packed in Moisture Proof Containers.

A totally unique and one of a kind product for keeping shrimp alive for a full and productive day of salthingyer fishing. SHRIMP-BUDDIESä are actually two products in one. Each individual container of SHRIMP-BUDDIESä contains both a gray tablet, which is the oxygen tablet, and a green tablet which is the water conditioning tablet.

The gray oxygen tablet bubbles all day long releasing oxygen into the water for the shrimp to utilize. The green tablet dissolves in a matter of minutes to fully condition the water by removing harmful ammonia, chlorine and heavy metals, adding beneficial electrolytes, reducing fungus and bacteria, and keeping the shrimp frisky. Once dissolved, the green tablet leaves the water a clear green color.

The tablets are packaged in individual, moisture and oxygen-proof containers. These containers are sealed with easy to open laminated foil seals. This packaging is important so that the product is kept fresh and dry until ready for use.

Our packaging is colorful, practical, easy to open and includes beneficial information for the live bait customer.

Oxygen tablets

THE OXYGEN EDGE™ & OXY-CHUM™

 The Oxygen Edge is a special piece of equipment that does an extraordinary job supercharging live bait.  Live bait, bass, crappie and walleye  are easy to transport and stockpile with The Oxygen Edge. Oxygen deprivation stress in livewell water negatively affects captive live bait fish, live bait shrimp, bass, crappie and walleye. Disease and death often follow hypoxic insults in fish and people after sustained oxygen deprivations.

That oxygen in pill form or dissolved in some magic water can be nothing than a shameless scam is easily shown by a little calculation:
32 gram of O2 (1 mol) take up a volume of 22.4 liter. Therefore, 1 gram of O2 can fill 0.7 liter, the amount in 3.5 liter of air, about 2 breaths. So, to supplement the oxygen from breathing by a significant amount you had to swallow such a pill every minute. Add to this that it is very doubtful that it may be absorbed through the intestines, but some people are willing to believe anything as long as it doesn't come from a doctor Sad.  Gaseous oxygen in the guts, together with the methane produced there, would give a nice explosive mixture ;D.
Some people swallow oxygen since it passes directly to the liver and there it cleanses some dangerous toxins (at least that is the sales argument of the quacks).

Conclusion: Oxygen pills are about as helpful against CH as M&M's, but much more expensive.

It's about time that I lose some harsh words over the 'researchers' of the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, University of West Florida, see here or here (what do they know about CH anyway?). First, we don't know how they applied the oxygen, by those nose cannulas? Then 6 clusterheads using oxygen and 8 using cold air is an extremely small sample. How many attacks where treated? Only one each? If several for each clusterhead, why didn't each test person try both treatment? To state for 8 cases something like "significantly higher" for one outcome than the other is stretching statistical rules a bit too far for my taste. These people should first try to "cognize" themselves. Publish or Perish.....

IMHO, oxygen works in this way: Since the brain regulates the amount of oxygen it receives to a close tolerance, it sends a command to constrict the arteries when very oxygen rich blood arrives, the same constriction that is caused by triptans.
When breathing cold air, it has warmed up anyway when it reaches the lung, so there is not more oxygen available. Its chilling effect on the airways may be helpful for people who overheat during an attack, in the same way as a bag of frozen peas.
I have tried on two occasions air of around freezing temperature (out of despair and lack of oxygen) and found it slightly better than nothing, but a very poor substitute for oxygen. But then, a cold pack doesn't help me much neither.

Depakote can have bad side effects for some people, including dizziness. Verapamil can lower some peoples blood pressure to dangerously low levels (and could possibly cause "blackouts"Wink.

Maybe there are other preventative meds that he could take. But oxygen tablets are not the answer. I don't think they will hurt... but won't help either.

Ask if he has tried predisolone as a preventative? Works for many people.  Or breathing high concentration oxygen to abort CH attacks?
