Prednisone and insomnia

My doc started me on Prednisone, 40mg in am for 5 days then tapering down. I took it yesterday morning and was extremely hyper all day. I was talking a mile a minute and just flying around the restaurant where I waitress. I made amazing tips although that might have been cause it was mothers day and people felt bad that I had to work. So I took my melatonin, 2mg last night and went to bed at about midnight and proceeded to be wide awake until almost 5 this morning. No pain all night! but no sleep either. I got about 3 hours but I feel fine, hyper again from the next dose. Has anyone else had this happen? Will it wear off or should I plan on accomplishing a lot at night for a while? els

Els, Pred kept me up all nite the first nite too...but then for the next 6 nites...ahhhh, blissful sleep. And that's ALL I used it for, was to get a break. Started it, then immediately tapered off. Don't know if that will be the same for you, as it did not make me hyper during the day. I wish ya luck, Mast

els, Yep, I also experienced pretty bad insomnia while taking Prednisone. I'd guess I averaged about 3-4 hours of sleep a night until I finally got off the stuff. I was on Pred for about 5 weeks (started at 70mg/day for 5 days, then slowly tapered off - down 10 mg every 4-5 days (tried tapering faster and my CH came back each time), I also took Verapamil at 720mg/day (480mg wasn't enough) until the cycle finally passed after my usual 10-12 week period. I know the insomnia compounded the problem, but the Prednisone also left me ready to bite anyone's head off who looked cross-eyed at me ... my wife was pretty concerned, "Who are you and what have you done with my sweet husband?" By the end of the first 2 weeks on Prednisone I was one bad MoFo ... Prednisone for me was a case of the cure being almost worst than the disease, but I was still grateful to get relief from the Beast, whatever the cost. Thank God I'm only episodic so far!
