I am 17 years old and have been suffering from episodic clusters for 2 years now. I have recently been very down because the normal round of prednizone has not abolished the cluster as it normally does. However after speaking with a friend who's husband is a cluster companion, she suggested simply taken magnesium supplements. It has worked extremely well. I take 250 Mg in the morning and 250 Mg in the evening. Although I am still left with a slightly dull headache throughout most of the day and an attack every other day or so, it is still much better than 3 attacks EVERY day! Also at the begining of my cycle when the attacks were not too severe I experimented using magneisum as an abortive treatment. I would take 2 250mg tablets and crush them into a powder. then I would mix them into a glass of milk or juice and drink the mixture. I would also accompany this with some caffeine and motrin. A few times it actually completely got rid of the attack. I was astonished... It worked exactly like taking a Zomig, but quite a bit less expensive as you can imagine! The Magnesium takes a couple of days for a "loading period" before you notice its full effects as a preventative treatment. When I found what it could do for me I literally felt a light bulb go on above my head.... "What a blessing and an awesome secret" were the thoughts that ran through my head... give it a try

Very pleased for you! The role of magnesium is a topic which pops up here from time to time. My sense is that folks report very uneven benefits--but like so much about CH, individual response to various treatments is significant. Have you explored: WWW.HEADACHEPAINFREE.COM ? The only site I know of with much info on use of magnesium.

I have just returned to the board after a year or so off. About 6 months ago, my doctor started me on a regimen of Magnesium, and vitamin B2. I had been using lithium as a preventative when on cycle, cafergot and oxygen for attacks. I should have gone on cycle around the time change, but did not. I've gone up to 12 months without going on cycle so it's a little early to tell for sure if this combo is working, but I'm tickled to death to hear there really might be something to this. Other then the obvious complications of taking magnesium daily......(it's kind of a laxative!!!!)...it's a very inexpensive therapy. Hope it's the answer for you! Joe Sprecco
