methergine to replace Sansert?

Doing some research on CH found this site http://www.upstate.edu/neurology/haas/hpclrx.htm Perhaps methylergonovine, a semi-synthetic ergot alkoloid closely related to methysergide, will be an adequate substitute. An open study of this drug suggested that it too can decrease the frequency and severity of cluster headaches (Mueller et al., 1997). One 0.2 mg tablet is given 3-4 times daily. Although it has less side effects than methysergide, Has anyone tried this drug yet?

Yep. I'm on it now. Just started two days ago. Similar side effects as Sansert, but they are quickly fading. Also taking Verapamil 240 mg/2x per day as well as 60 mg Prednisone in the morning. Tapering off the Prednisone after one week. It seemed kind of silly at first - Methergine is used for post partum uterine bleeding, but it seems to function as a vaso-constrictor. So far, so good. Hi Seiji and Brewcrew, Methergine sounds like an excellent substitute for Sansert and I have printed out the information on the website and these postings to take to my doc. Now when you say the side effects are similiar to Sansert, what exactly do you mean?? I have had very little side effects from Sansert, no sleepiness, no wierdness at all except maybe the first day, first pill where I was exhausted after taking it. Diminished and gone by Day 2 and since no side effects at all, one of the main reasons it is such an effective drug for me. So please if you don't mind let me know what side effects you guys experienced. Thanks so much for letting me know and taking the time to share your insights and research with me!! DizzyD

Dizzy - The only side effect I speak of is the first day or two of what I call that "feeling of disconnectedness." Since it is so chemically similar to LSD, one almost has a feeling of tripping, but without the hallucinations. You are correct, however - they go away after the first day or two (depending on how long it's been since you last were on it). After that, no side effects whatsoever for me. The reason I describe the side effects I noticed with Methergine is because it seemed VERY similar to Sansert. I'm hoping that the benefits will be as similar. What the heck - as far as I'm concerned, it's worth a try. Bill

The only noticeable side effect is a funny taste in my mouth, other than that it has been working great for me.

Sorry, but I did not mention that Methergine is a lot easier to find in pharmacy's than Sansert. Seems most Pharmacy's have Methergine in stock for post partum bleeding.

Will let you know what doc says and what happens when I take it. I can't believe it is that similiar and IT WORKS! Thanks for responding about the side effects, hopefully I too will handle as well as you guys. Best of luck to you all. DizzyD
