Hi, I'm taking verapmil for the beast. Of course it's for the beast and not for high blood pressure. I'm reading alot about Hawthorn, Reishi, Coleus, and Dandelion for high blood pressure. Now I did check the archives but had no luck. Does anyone have any knowledge on it ? Maybe you've tried one of these or are using one, fill me in PLEASE! Geotan

Hi Geotan, We best call Verapamil for what it does primarily: it's a Calcium channel blocker. Blocking the Ca channels can lower an excessive BP, by relaxing over tightened arteries and/or correcting too fast heart contractions. For us clusterheads the benefit of Verapamil is that it makes the vessels in the head respond only sluggishly to nerve signals commanding to expand. Doing this, the feedback loop is broken and the usual extrem rapid rise of an attack is greatly dampened. There are other types of medications useful to control high BP, like the beta blockers, but they usually do little to nothing against CH. So, if you are looking for herbs to control CH, their BP lowering properties are useless for us, unless they do it by blocking the Ca channels. To get information on the mode of action of herbs mine is the wrong address.   I prefer the pharmaceutical products, that have a know and repeatable composition and dosage. PFNADs Ueli
