Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's)

I've been fortunately CH free for about 3 years. When thinking about my last episode I think I was taking an SSRI for depression and wonder if that was part of the cause. Now I've been prescribed another SSRI and I'm worried it might kick off another cluster. Anyone know about this stuff and how it might or might not cause a cluster episode? I've been prescribed Lexapro and previously took Paxil. Help!! I'm not taking it until I get this resolved.

Hi DPWeston. I've tried Serzone, Zoloft, and Paxil. They had no effect on CH one way or the other. Had major problems discontinuing Paxil, it was a month of bloody hell.

DP, SSRI's are drugs like prozac and seroxatin. I saw a neuro once who said he'd had some success with it in treating CH. I personally think not. The main thing is SSRI's are contra indicated with Imitrex, so if you're on them you should not use Imitrex. They are apparantly OK with Maxalt though.

Lee, thanks for your response, but could you be more explicit. Sounds like the SSRI's you took put you into a cluster episode. Is that true?

Could your three year remission be a benifit of the SSRI's? I took prozac and started two year remissions. Before that I was lucky to get 9 months.

Serzone, Prozac, and a three year stint of Zoloft appeared to have no effect on my CH cycles. I had other effects, but not CH related. Good luck, Mark

Hi DPWeston, I too was CH free for about 2 years. I have been on Paxil for 6 months now. I just started having episodes the past 2 weeks. So, I really don't know if my CH's are related to taking Paxil or not. I will see if it causes more episodes since the dr just increased my dosage. Good Luck to you......
