Im Kelly A Sufferer for three confusing years. After landing a good job with excellent,(read Healthcare provider) Insurance I decided to have a second oppinion on my Head pain after it started again around September(the same as every year for the past two years). As I rattled off my symptoms my doctor who was fresh from medical school, nodded and said he could vaguely remember reading about somthing this systematic in Med school.I waited in the room alone for about 40 minutes untill he returned to tell me that I had TEXTBOOK symptoms of CH's. Well I was glad I didnt have a tumor or need major sugery. He told me that this was veeeerry rare and showed alot of support and intrest. He gave me a 'script for O2 and Maxalt.I needed 3 Maxalt a day to make it through w/o CH's.The insurance said I could have 16 a month. The O2 helped but god forbid I be without it. I got on the internet and found these CH sites and my heart was lifted and felt comforted that there were others that had been through the frightening symptoms of this Monster CH's.THANK YOU!!!! I begain sifting and lurking here for the past month and a half.Looking for things to awnser me and the beast that seemed to live in my skull.I found a print out form to give to my Employer to help explain my disabillity and help me communicate how this pain is immediate and uncontrolable.I felt a small comfort in the fact that with this I might be able to save my job and livelyhood but, not comforted that my dread CH would still be lurking ready to paralyze me..untill I first verbalized this to my boss. He had been a sufferer too!(another light in the tunnel!)He had told me that he had suffered through the end of Highschool into his early twentys.Untill one day at an airport his aunt had dug into her purse(he said that she was a walking pharmacy) that she gave him a bottle of ADAPIN saying that this would help. He hasnt had a CH attack since. Well the insurance compay wasnt helping me and I was about to join a test group that I found here on CH.com so I was open to trying anything to stop the tourment. I called my doctor said the magic word ADAPIN...He said it wasnt in his Palm pilot MD.UGGGHH! I jumped on the net and found it.Adapin/Doxepin/ect/ect.Doxepin he had heard of. It took about two days of 1 attack a day and some crosseyed sight (about 4 days blurry and disoriented) and my attacks have stopped. Now I still know they are there. But Nothing no tearing no headbanging!I am waiving the Flag to those of you that havent found the insurance or the cure to stop the CH tourment. This doxepin/adapin has worked to stop my pain.It has worked to stop my bosses pain.I havent seen it mentioned anywhere on these sites. So I am going to shout it....GET ADAPIN/DOXEPIN!!!!Check it out.Ask your DR about it. 2 out of 2 is good odds. Post here and post often if you have/have not tried this adapin/doxepin.Tell your results.Help other CH sufferers find their cure and help find a solution to this. I really feel that this will be it/I have had a drink and nothing.Chain smoked and nothing,Changed my daily routine and felt nothing. If you have heard of this drug post here. Please let me know if I am a hope-case fluke. After 3 years of pain and wondering.I am confident, very confident again!!75mg a night untill february. Thanks in advance!! Kelly Chandler AZ

Doxepin(sinequan), a tricyclic anti depressant. Also used to treat anxiety and narcolepsy(sleep disorder) I've not seen it mentioned here, but no doubt someone will know more. Glad it's working for you, I'd like to know more. Steve

I'm on sinequan (50mg before sleep), along with verapamil (640 mg) and depakote (750mg), but at week 15 this is the longst cycle though the most modest in pain. did a search here for sinequan with only one result(just the name), glad to know its generic name so I can look again. Was told it worked on seritonin levels, as opposed to depakote working on dopamine, and that it would help me sleep through the night, and it seems to do that....Ueli did an excelent explanation of calcium channel blockers (verapamil) anyone got the same for this or a link?

found this in the archives "Doxepin acts very much like amitiptyline. They block the reuptake of serotonin in the neurla synapses (when serotonin is released by a neuron, some of it is reabsorbed by the neuron that sent it out (reuptake), tricyclics attach to the reuptake sites. This stops the serotonin from being reabsorbed and keeps it in the synapse longer thus enhancing it's effects)." lota talk about wild (bad) dreams, I've got 'em too, but they started up with the depakote and groggy mornings, what morning? the combo of depakote and sinequan keeps me falling off at every hour of the day this is what must be endured it seems

more info from the OUCH website (somewhat redundant, but some clarifications) "How do these medicines work? Over time, the tricyclics enhance the concentrations in certain regions of the CNS of two neurotransmitter chemicals, norepinephrine and serotonin, whose under activity has been implicated in depression and other disorders. When these neurotransmitters, known as monoamines, have been secreted, they must then be inactivated by a variety of mechanisms including reuptake into the secreting cells. Tricyclics impede this reuptake process so that the monoamines remain active longer after secretion, presumably affecting the preexisting underactivity which was responsible for the target symptoms. Some tricyclic side effects relate to the fact that these medications have similar effects on other neurotransmitters in the CNS, notably histamine and acetylcholine." here's the link to the full OUCH article: http://www.clusterheadaches.org/library/medications/tricyclic_antidepres sants.htm where you can find all the dirt on side effects and why this Tricyclic vs. others

Just posting back to say that the Doxepin is still kicking ass and taking names.Great preventative!!Morning haze still a side effect but it wears away after BKfast. No other side afects to report. Still I recomend to those searching for a blocker to call their doc to phone in a 15 day supply.Your efforts will be rewarded. Kelly

This is good news; I have been using the prime component for two years. I have been receiving the raw materials from the planet K-PAX. Takes a while to do all the chemistry but is certainly worth the effort. It is nice to know we can now receive this product from earth sources. Please keep us advised of any further breakthroughs in your research. Lee

My dr just started me on Doxepin, 50 mg at night, and wants me to work up to 150 mg a day as soon as some of the drowsiness disappears. First day after pill, I was sort of drowsy but not bad, 2nd day no headache til late in the day, and the weather is changing which usually triggers mine. So I am hopeful. He did warn me of all the side effects, but so far, I am tolerating the drug. I would be SO happy if this works, and continues to work for me.
