I'm new to this site, but suffered my first cluster headache about 35 years ago. Since then I have had only 5 or 6 clusters. In the late 70's I tried cafergot, fiorinol and percocet, none of which provided any relief. In going through a medical book at the time, my Dr saw a n article that suggested treating as for tension. He asked me to try valium.
I can say that as much as I dislike the side effects of the valium fog, this treatment gives me almost total relief within moments of the onset of a headache. Even if I wake up in the middle of the night, I'll chew on 5 mg and let it secrete into my system through my mouth. Within 15 minutes my pain will begin to subside (before reaching maximum) and within 30 minutes I'll be comfortable again.
I'm surprised to see that no one else seems to have had similar experience with this treatment.
I'd be interested in any comments.

Hello Rob

Valium or diazepam work by reducing the alertness of the brain (fog as you describe it)

Apparently they increase the effects of a neurotransmitter called GABA which obviously occours natrually, this chemical helps induce sleep.

As sleep is also affected by melatonin and of course the hypothalamus, it is an interesting concept.

I just wish I knew the answers.

It will be interesting to see if any one else has benefited from valium.

Steve,
I don't know they whys and hows of how the valium works, but I can tell you it does the trick. If I feel one coming on in the daytime ( not too often) I'll take about 1-2 mg and the feeling will go away and if I take 2.5 mg before I go to bed, I'll get through the night with no problems. I can honestly say that I can control the pain to the point that it is truly a minor issue. My biggest probelm is the side effects of the valium, but at such low doses, it's really not a major issue, especially givenm the alternative.
I just started having the headaches again, after about 15 years, so I'm not sure what to expect in terms of longevity, but can only hope it will pass again soon.
Judging from looking through this site, I have the feeling that the use of valium is not a very common remedy as it didn't show up at all in a key word search.
I can only hope my positive experience can benefit someone else as I know what it's like to suffer with this pain.
