Progress report on Verapamil

Hi all - wanted to let you know how I was doing on very low doses of Verapamil. As background, I started my cycle midJuly and am using O2 and Imitrex to abort. My last cycle lasted 16 weeks. Got pissed and decided to try to prevent. Talked my Doc into Verapamil but at very low dosage because my blood pressure is usually low (110-120 / 70-80). First week I was at 120 mg/day of Vera and still having significant breakthrough, usually 2 or 3 a day, although they were lower in intensity (down to K 5-7 range). After a week, I went to 180 mg per day. This lowered the number and intensity of attacks with occasionally PF days within a week. After two weeks, the Verapamil has fully kicked in. No headaches for 7 days now. I still have occasional shadows but I haven't had to huff any O2 or pop any Imitrex for a week. I am now 8 - 9 weeks into my cycle.
Side effects have been minimal. I changed my diet to avoid beef and I'm pushing roughage, so I haven't had the severe constipation others have mentioned. The other problem (with ED) is starting to rear its head. (or should I say lower its head) Like most men, this poses some significant psychological problems. Lets see - headaches and sex, or no headaches and no sex.........  at this point, I can go a while longer without, but this problem will have to be addressed at some point in time. Anyone using Viagra and Vera?  Undecided
Again, thanks for all the support and outstanding information

Domm,

Congrats.........that's great news although that one side effect is a bummer. I too have been having great success with Verapamil. I have been taking 120 MG twice a day now for about 2 weeks and have been CH free (knock on wood) with just a couple of shadows. Today as the humidty is high with occassional showers I feel one trying to come out but not quite getting there. I was on another BP med for high BP so this is killing two birds with one stone for me.

Since this is my first cycle after coming out of remission I have no idea when my cycle would end but I have to stay on the Verapamil anyway for my BP so I guess it really doesn't matter.

Hope you continue to stay PF

Christine - thanks and yes, its been a relief to have some time off from the beast. Sounds like you're having success also and I like the part about the dual function of the med for you. Unfortunately, its not what I needed for me. The other thing I've noticed is that I seem to get cold easier. Fall and winter are moving in to Michigan (high today was 60) and I've been cold all day. I don't lack energy, just seem to need more clothing to stay warm. I guess that only makes sense.
Any ideas on when and how to stop taking it? My remission periods are usually 2 1/2 to 3 years and I don't want to take meds that I don't need for three years, especially with those side effects. (Reality is, I was probably on the edge and the Verapamil pushed me over it).
Here's hoping for pain free days for all

Hey Domm.

As you and I have discussed via email, low doses of Vera don't often work for CH's.  It's great that you are having some success at only 180 mg!

The side effects can be really variable and do seem to be relative to the dose - the higher the dose, the worse they are but they can all be offset.

Yes, I've spoken to three people (who shall remain nameless) posting here that use Verapamil with Viagra and are very, very happy with the results.  All three said that the Viagra worked as advertised without causing CH's.

Good luck......
