I'm reading some surveys done with OUCH Italia people.
And the only shared thing for the 95% uf us all (OK, UELI I know what you think, but let me end.. ;D) is the traumatic origin.
I also know that this may create some bad reactions, but .... let me say....

FIRST POINT
First CH cycle starts after A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE (from 1 to 12 months before the cycle)
With traumatic experience I mean:
- Head or non-head phisical trauma
- a pretty invasive surgery
- Psychological trauma: a loss of a loved person, a big shock, a big risk ran...
But, that was definitely the biggest and/or worst in your life before CH.
SECOND POINT
Any of us was a potential sufferer from headaches, and the trauma worsen the condition to CH
THIRD POINT (related to 2nd)
ANY headaches sufferers (I mean primary headaches) have a hypotalamus hypertrophy (not only us CHers)
This statement may be confirmed (not scientifically....) from some people I know, that suffers from primary headaches and did a CAT or an MR, and from a radiologist, friend of mine.
I would bring this point to some doctors....
FOURTH POINT
Despite the big difference of pain level, primary headaches and CH have the same origin: a neuronal "confusion" (who knows why and when)
In fact.... triptans work for both of us, and with the same principle.

Now, I would ask to you:
YOU ALSO have had a TRAUMA of the kind detailed at point 1?
And the same kind/level of trauma has been repeated many times in your life?
(to avoid the usual statistical error: I have similar trauma every year, then is wrong to think that's possible that it started my CH ;D)

If you answer YES to the 1st and NO to the second...... .....hmmmm something to study, I think

Nope to number 1. And the same nope for the year preceding becoming chronic.
About the hypertrophic hypothalamus. I don't think the enlargement (that we have, at least) can be seen on normal CAT scans nor MRIs, which is why Goadsby was only able to detect it while using PET scans. Could the people who said they had it show up on either misunderstood what the doctor said he/she saw?

Ted the hypothesis is from the radiologist (the friend of mine). He "read" the scans and it "seems" to him that the (all) the hypotalamus may be larger than the normal.
And more.... I have always disagree with this whole thing... but the percentage here is so high, then I just searched a confirm or a negation.

The hippopotamus attack was traumatic but I don't think it brought on my headaches.
My no was for:
I've never had a head injury.
I've never had a body injury. Except for 2 broken toes 10 years apart and a broken finger while arm wrestling while drunk.
I've never had a serious psycho trauma.
The worst thing to ever happen to me was at the first Cluster Convention when you referred to Dr. Pepper as cough syrup. That almost broke my heart. But I'm better now.

No head trauma. Started ch at age 11. Only body traumas were an operation at age 6. Had a baby at age 21. Broke small bone in foot at age 30. No mental trauma.

Yes, to trauma...head trama and a broken nose then the chs started the next day...then i was episodic for 20 years or so and had another head injury..car wreck...and my chs started out of cycle and never ended..became chronic then...  nancyc

No head trauma, physical or emotional, on my part, but I've met another CH'er whose clusters started after a head injury during an auto accident.
Just more confirmation that this phenomenon makes NO freakin' sense...no across-the-board initiating factors; occurs to different people at different times; some episodic and some chronic, reacts to some meds with some people but not to others...
There just ain't no figurin' this thing out...

I had a mild concussion at 21 when I got hit with some steel at work. Seven stitches to close the gash which was right next to my left eye.
Clusters didn't start until I was 44, but always on the left side. No emotional or psychological strees that I can remember before the CHs started. Actually, I think I was having a good year, but my memory is suspect these days.(Old age and too many (ahem) when I was a kid - you know, short and long term memory stuff...)
Had sinus infections and allergies all my life. Headaches only from hayfever, etc. No migraines.

My mother told me that when I was a baby she was driving with me in the carseat in the back when she got into a car accident and she's always told me that she thinks this is why I've always had headches. Says it was her fault. The doctor found no problems at the time tho. I do not know if this counts. I've had head and neck pain since I was 5.

You know, if I could find a way to blame this on my Mom...I would...hee hee.. ;D She did say she bounced a plate off my nose when I was a baby (still have the scar from it).
But NO...no head trauma to report for me!
