Coffe vs. Imitrex...

I have had CH on and off since 1997. In June of 2002, I was finally diagnosed. Before being diagnosed with CH, I was, what the Doctors refered to as a "chronic sinus sufferer". Since I was told that I had sinus problems, I figured that I needed heat and moisture so I made and drank coffee (lots of it). It helped and relieved the pain after about 20-30 minutes (and still does). I attended a Headache Clinic (Kaiser, San Diego) and was told by the Doctor to stop drinking coffee when my next cycle starts (I cycled out a week before I attended this clinic) and instead use Imitrex and Verapamil. To me, this sounds "not to smart". I know that caffeine is a "drug" but it appears to me that it is less of a drug than Imitrex would be. I am lucky, my attacks peak at K-7 or K-8 and wouldn't coffee be a better sollution than a drug that I am supposed to inject?? Anyone with experience in drinking coffee vs. injecting Imitrex???

Wow coffee works for you... if that was my case I would never have a pain in my life... Coffee is my main vice... MY car passes everything but a DUNKIN DONUTS... I have heard that they have caffene in some meds for Migraine and Cafergot has it too... If it works for you why would you ever use anything else... just curious ree

During the last year, I have been given different pain killers, including a narcotic (I can't remember the name). They did not work at all - instead I ended up on my knees on the kitchen floor with my tears flowing out of control - it have never been as bad as when I tried the narcotic medication that I was given. I don't know, but maybe the coffee is a mental trigger that does something to stop the pain - causing me to "force" the pain away.... By the end of a cycle, I truly hate coffee... I drink two to three large 7-11 cups during each attack - sometimes up to six attacks per day and a couple per night...

sounds a lot like me 20 or so years ago. I have been a heavy coffee drinker since I went into the navy at 17. At that time all I could do for the pain was take narcotics tylenol 3 or 4 mostly I found that if I drank a lot of coffee with the T3's It increased the effect. During one of my cycles the DR. told me that the coffee "probably was my trigger" and if not then it had to be making the ch worse. When you drink that much coffee and then stop it can cause headaches. well when I stoped drinking coffee and got the caffeen withdrawl headaches they trigered a ch every time(while I was in cycle) My ch cycle starts out mild and then builds as the cycle progresses. also every cycle is also getting stronger. The coffee helps with the first mild ch but anything over a kip3 it won't touch. as for IMITREX inj.It is the only abortive that works for me. it works fast and it works every time with no negative side effects. now if I can only get enough to get me through my cycle then I will be ok

There has been past discussion on coffee & caffeine. For myself, I find I it helps my attacks immensely. You can find lots of info. about caffeine and clusters by using the search button, and type in "caffeine". Good Luck! Mel

Never tried Imatrex. Had a close call when a Neurologist prescribed a med that started with ergo. It dropped my blood pressure to a dangerous level. Afraid to try any other medications. Hot coffee usually relieves the pain in 10 or so minutes for me for most of the headaches.
